First new volunteers of 2016 join the team - next induction is on Tuesday the 2nd February

Submitted by Steve on 13:00, 8th Jan, 2016 | 0

On Tuesday we held our first volunteer evening of 2016.

We welcomed 6 new volunteers and will see 4 of those starting this weekend.

Without volunteers we really couldn't care for the 300 animals at the Shelter and help thousands more every year.

The GSPCA operates 24 hours 7 days a week and we are fortunate to have over 600 volunteers that help ensure we can help animals around the clock as well as raise the £2000 a day it costs to run the GSPCA.

Tours for 2016 at the GSPCA after a great year in 2015

Submitted by Steve on 17:42, 7th Jan, 2016 | 0

Over Christmas and the New Year at the GSPCA we held a number of tours which once again proved extremely popular.

The many visitors enjoyed looking behind the scenes and seeing the hundreds of animals in our care.

During the school breaks we run a series of guided tours at the GSPCA and we have now planned for 2016 with some special tours for the children.

It is your opportunity to visit behind the scenes at our Animal Shelter in St Andrews and see the work being carried out for the new build.

Please watch out for oiled birds around the coast after the rough weather - Could you please donate or sponsor their care

Submitted by Steve on 15:46, 5th Jan, 2016 | 0

With all of the rough and stormy sustained weather recently the GSPCA are bracing for a potentially busy period of sick and injured animals and birds.

Only in the last few hours have two oiled guillemots been rescued and arrived at the Shelter and there are likely to be many more.

The reason we and other coastal animal charities see this increase after stormy weather is that crude oil that has settled on the sea bed gets stirred up and floats to the surface where the birds sadly get coated and then find it difficult to fly, preen, hunt and care for themselves.

Today is a very sad day at the GSPCA as one of our longest serving staff heads off for pastures new.

Tony Gallie who has worked at the GSPCA for nearly 10 years has been a fantastic team member and excellent worker whilst he has been with us and will be missed by all of the team.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It may be New Years Eve but tomorrow Tony will be looking to a new year with a new role and we will all miss him as he has been an amazing team member here at the GSPCA."

Don't forget the fireworks and ensuring your pets are safe on New Years Eve

Submitted by Steve on 16:02, 16th Dec, 2015 | 0

On New Years Eve at midnight to celebrate the New Year many will be setting off fireworks, so please think of your pets and animals around you.

Every year the GSPCA are called out and receive stray dogs and cats during periods of fireworks, which have either escaped or run off due to being scared by the loud bangs they make.

Sadly less than 45% of the stray dogs and cats are microchipped that are found as strays and brought to the GSPCA, and even less have collars with tags.
