If we didn't have volunteers at the GSPCA we couldn't exist, as every day kind individuals give up their own time to help the Animal Shelter and the work that goes on around the clock.

In a very basic calculation volunteers gave up well in excess of 13'000 hours during 2012 which is the same as 300 people working one 40 hour week.

From dog walkers to fund raisers, night wardens to receptionists, gardening to mucking out the GSPCA are grateful to each and every person that gives up their time to help the many animals in our care.

As part of Volunteer Week which started on the 1st June the GSPCA are holding an open evening for those interested in helping out.

The event will take place at the GSPCA Animal Shelter tomorrow night (Wednesday 5th June) at 6.30pm and it is your chance to come up for a chat and find out all about the work of the GSPCA.

Volunteers need to be 14 years or older to help at the Shelter, but for those younger you can find out how you can fund raise for the Shelter.

Here are a few words from some of our volunteers

Natalie Randall, Volunteer Night Warden -

'My name is Natalie I have been a GSPCA night warden for eleven years. This can be extremely varied work from offering advice to pet owners rescuing injured wildlife, dealing with animals involved in road traffic accidents and transporting them as quickly and as comfortably to the vet, to assisting the Guernsey Police with stray dog’s, loose cattle and horses. Although this job can be very upsetting at times it is extremely rewarding, and I always have the full support of the management and staff at the shelter. Over the years I have been a warden I have attended lots of call-outs some with happy endings and others not so nice. For anyone who is interested in volunteering for the GSPCA my advice would be to give it a go it is very rewarding.'

Jen Bradshaw, Volunteer Night Warden -

'My partner (Mat Hill-Smith) and I have been night wardens for the GSPCA since the start of the year. We decided to do this after our dog was put to sleep, the GSPCA were good to us during a difficult time so we wanted to give something back. The job is so varied and interesting, you never know what you'll get. One night you'll be looking for escaped horses next time assisting the police rescuing animals from the site of a fire. You meet lovely people and some wonderful animals. There's some upsetting sides of the job and some parts that are not very nice, but the happy endings outweigh the bad parts.'

Darren Monday Volunteer at the Shelter and with fund raising -

'I started working for the GSPCA September 2012 for the sea front Sunday and was so amazed at the commitment they have for the animals, I started volunteering shortly after that and my fave animals to work with are the cats, that said I love all the animals there. I fill honored to be able to help.'

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager 'It is amazing what our volunteers do for the Shelter from helping clean the animals to climbing mountains to raise funds.'

'Volunteers Week started the 1st June and for those interested in helping with animals in Guernsey then our event tomorrow night is the ideal opportunity to pop up for tea, biscuits and a chat to find out more.'

'It's not all work with animals as we need volunteers with skills from gardening to administration, talking to groups to helping at events.'

'I have to say one of the hardest jobs was on Sunday at our Dog Show judged by our mascot Bernard the dog when Darren one of our volunteers did a very special job, I can't say what but I'll let you have a guess by checking out the videos on youtube.'

'The next event staff and volunteers are taking part is the Itex Walk on Saturday to raise funds for the Shelter and other worthy causes and if you would like to sponsor us you can do so online, calling 01481 257261, by post or by popping into the Shelter in St Andrews.'

'We are also at Vets 4 Pets on Sunday 9th June for their open day and we are always looking for volunteers to help at our events so please let me know if you can help'

You do not need to book a place for tomorrow night but for more details please email [email protected] or call 01481 257261
