With over 9 stray tortoise handed in to the GSPCA last year and 20 reported lost this is the first of 2013 to be handed into the GSPCA Animal Shelter.

The GSPCA receive all sorts of animals, reptiles and birds as strays and this tortoise is just one of the more unusual that we see.

We are still looking for the owner of the Bearded Dragon that staff have called Sorrento that was found in Collings Road last week and this hard shelled reptile was found in the Torteval area and if you have lost your tortoise then please get in touch.

Staff have called the tortoise Alcatraz and if you think that this may be your tortoise please call 01481 257261 or pop into the Shelter in St Andrews where we would ask to see a picture of your missing tortoise to ensure that it is a match.

To find out advice on what to do if you have lost your pet or found a stray animal you can visit our Lost and Found Advice web page by clicking here.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'It is surprising how fast tortoise can move and if a gate is left open or a gap under the fence then they will make a break for freedom.'

'It is important that where ever you keep any pet it is secure and appropriate as we see all sorts of stray animals every year.'

'Alcatraz the tortoise is safe and well but if you or you know of anyone that has lost a pet then we do urge you to get in touch with the Animal Shelter so we have a report of it and if they do come in we can get them back to their owners quickly.'

We are currently looking for sponsorship of a new mower, if you can help please click here for more details.
