Beaches Reopen to Dogs from Today, But Please Be Mindful of Wildlife
The GSPCA is reminding dog owners that from today dogs are once again permitted on Guernsey's beaches following the end of the seasonal summer restrictions.
While many owners and their four-legged friends will be looking forward to enjoying the freedom of the island's coastline, the GSPCA is urging everyone to remain mindful of wildlife, particularly seals, seabirds and other animals that may be encountered around our shores.
GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:
"It's wonderful that dogs can enjoy Guernsey's beautiful beaches again from today, but we would ask all owners to be considerate of the wildlife that shares our coastline. Every year we receive calls about disturbed seals and seabirds, and in some cases animals can be injured or separated from their young."
"If you spot a seal pup or any wildlife on the beach, please keep dogs well away and ensure they remain under control. Even the friendliest dog can cause stress to wild animals simply by approaching too closely."
The charity is reminding beach users of a few simple guidelines:
- Keep dogs under close control around wildlife.
- Never allow dogs to approach or chase seals, seal pups or seabirds.
- Observe wildlife from a distance and give animals plenty of space.
- If you find an injured, sick or distressed wild animal, contact the GSPCA immediately on 257261.
- Always clear up after your dog and help keep Guernsey's beaches clean and enjoyable for everyone.
The GSPCA's Animal Ambulance and rescue team continue to respond to wildlife emergencies throughout the year and appreciate the public's support in helping protect Guernsey's wildlife.
As more people head outdoors with their pets during the autumn and winter months, the GSPCA is also encouraging owners to learn basic pet first aid skills.
