Breaking News as Kennel Foundations Begin in Major Milestone for the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal
The GSPCA is delighted to share exciting breaking news in the charity's ongoing #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal, as work has now begun on the foundations for the brand-new kennel block while construction of the new Wildlife Hospital continues to make impressive progress.
The charity's new Wildlife Hospital, which will provide modern facilities for thousands of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals every year, is nearing completion of its roof structure, with solar panels now being fitted as part of the GSPCA's commitment to creating a more sustainable future for animal welfare in Guernsey.
Alongside the Wildlife Hospital development, foundations have now started for the new kennel block, replacing the ten ageing kennels that were demolished to make way for the hospital build.
This former kennel section, which had served the charity for many years, had extremely low roofs and were increasingly difficult and costly to maintain. The new facility will provide a much-needed modern environment for dogs in the GSPCA's care.
The kennel development will feature two sections of four kennels and two sections of two kennels, creating indoor and outdoor accommodation designed around animal welfare, staff efficiency and future needs. The new facility will support stray dogs, dogs awaiting new homes, emergency boarding cases, cruelty and neglect investigations, seized animals and dogs requiring isolation due to ill health or illegal importation into the island.
To date, the GSPCA has raised over £2 million towards the appeal, but a further £2 million is still required to complete the project and associated works.
The appeal has faced several unexpected challenges and costs, including complex foundation requirements, asbestos removal, installation of a new sewage system and pumping station, replacement pipework and sustainable additions such as solar panels.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
"It is incredibly exciting to see the foundations for the new kennels now underway whilst the Wildlife Hospital continues to progress so well. Seeing the hospital roof nearly complete and the solar panels being installed is a significant milestone in what is the largest construction project in our charity's 153-year history.”
"The new kennel block will completely transform our dog facilities, providing modern indoor and outdoor accommodation for animals that desperately need our help. Every year we care for strays, dogs awaiting rehoming, emergency boarding cases, animals involved in welfare investigations and those requiring isolation, and these facilities will ensure we can continue providing the highest standards of care.”
"At the same time, our Wildlife Hospital team is exceptionally busy. The recent heatwaves have led to increased admissions of wildlife in distress and we continue to see the devastating impact of the myxomatosis outbreak affecting wild rabbits across the island.”

"The kennel team is incredibly excited to see the foundations now being laid for our future kennel facilities. The new state-of-the-art kennels will provide a huge improvement for both the animals in our care and the staff looking after them every day.”
"The design gives us much greater flexibility and allows us to provide dedicated areas for a wide range of cases whilst creating a safer, more comfortable and enriched environment for the dogs.”
"It will also add a much needed laundry room and also our first purpose built dog grooming and wash area."
"We hope the new kennels will be completed by the Spring and cannot wait to welcome the first dogs through the doors. In the meantime, we are investing approximately £15,000 into improvements to our current kennel facilities over the Summer to enhance welfare whilst we await the new build. Ali Le Huray, GSPCA Supervisor, added:
"Alongside the major construction projects, we are also carrying out additional improvements within our current cattery. We are installing extra protection to help shield our cat balcony runs from the extremes of weather, helping to ensure the cats can safely enjoy fresh air and enrichment throughout the year.”
"We have received an incredibly generous donation towards these improvements, which has enabled the project to get underway. We are still looking to raise the remaining £4,000 needed to complete the works, and would love to hear from anyone who would like to help support this important welfare project."
