Celebrating Trustees’ Week: Honouring the GSPCA Committee’s Dedication to Animal Welfare

As Trustees’ Week shines a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of charity trustees across the UK and Channel Islands, the GSPCA proudly celebrates its dedicated committee members who guide and support the organisation’s mission to protect and care for animals in Guernsey.

Since its founding in 1873, the GSPCA has relied on a committed committee to uphold its values of kindness and the prevention of cruelty to animals. These trustees volunteer their time, expertise, and passion to ensure the charity continues to thrive and meet the needs of the community.

Current GSPCA Committee Members:

  • John Knight BVetMed., MRCVS – President
A respected local veterinary surgeon and partner at The Vetcare Centres, John has served on the committee since 2000 and brings over 30 years of experience in animal welfare. He also advises international organisations including the Born Free Foundation.
  • Adele Stevens – Vice President & Committee Member
With over 25 years on the committee, Adele’s lifelong love of animals and dedication to the GSPCA have been instrumental in shaping the charity’s success.
  • Louise Gambrell (FCCA) – Treasurer & Committee Member
A qualified accountant with extensive experience in finance and strategy, Louise combines her professional skills with her passion for animals to strengthen the charity’s governance.
  • Steve Ford – Committee Member
Former RSPCA Chief Inspector, worked as Deputy Chief Ambulance Officer and currently the Airports Emergency Planning Officer, Steve brings a wealth of knowledge in animal welfare and emergency response.
  • Charisma Lyall – Committee Member
Co-opted in 2023, Charisma adds fresh energy and perspective to the team and a huge amount of legal experience.
  • Ali Brouard – GSPCA Secretary & Committee Member
Co-opted January 2025, Ali has brought a wealth of professional secretarial experience and knowledge in a broad range of areas.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said “Trustees’ Week is the perfect opportunity to thank our incredible committee

Their leadership and commitment ensure that the GSPCA can continue its vital work for animals across Guernsey.

From strategic planning to hands-on support, they are the backbone of our charity.”

“We sadly saw two amazing committee members retire this year after many years service and celebrated both Tom Le Pelley and Karen Girdlestone who have been invaluable but that made room for the fantastic Ali Brouard who joined the board as Secretary.”

“There are many ways to help support and volunteer at the GSPCA and check out our website for more details.”

The GSPCA is currently undertaking its #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal, a £3.7 million redevelopment project including a new Wildlife Hospital. The committee plays a key role in steering this ambitious initiative, ensuring the charity’s future sustainability and impact.
