On Sunday 15th May a very unusual visitor was rescued in Sark and brought into the GSPCA.

The first ever Long Eared Owlet at only approximately two weeks of age was found with no nest or parents in sight on Sark.

Concerned for the welfare the finders of the baby owl took advice and shortly after were on route to get the bird to the GSPCA.

Wo months on and Elizabeth as she has been named was ready to be released back to the wild.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said “On Sunday 15th May we had our first ever Long Eared Owlet in to the GSPCA.”

“We did have an adult bird in from Sark that we got back to the wild back in 2016.”

“The young bird was called Elizabeth and after a month of hand rearing she went in one of our rehab aviaries and a month later well she was ready for being released.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We see quite a few Barn Owls each year and occasional other species but never have we had a Long Eared Owl chick.”

“It is difficult to say why Elizabeth was out of the nest at such a young age it could be she fell or possibly pushed by an older chick, but she was certainly far too young to fend for herself.”

“Elizabeth thanks to the team has done really well and is now ready for the wild after a month in a rehabilitation aviary and the previous month in an intensive care unit.”

“As it was one of teams birthdays, Abby Oliveira had the privilege of opening Elizabeth’s aviary as we did a soft release.”

“Adult Long Eared Owls normally chase their young away as the start to fend for themselves so in discussions with those that know their behaviour we decided both for  this reason and a soft release aviary means she can come back for food if needed that it was the best option for her getting back to the wild.”

“She is such a stunning bird and it was wonderful to see the aviary opened and she will likely leave later on this evening.”
