This morning the GSPCA team had an alarm to start the day as a fire drill and training took place.

The GSPCA team learn something new every day as we have such a range on animals come into our care and a huge array of demands on our services.

We also carry out training and refresher training to remind the team on the procedures and processes we need to carry out each day and also in an emergency.

Earlier this year we had fire training thanks to the Guernsey Fire Service and team members have had training with G4S in using a range of fire equipment.

Today the alarm went off at 8am and the team of staff, volunteers and placements gathered at our meeting point where GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne went through the procedures and protocols not just about saving human life, but also what to do if we needed to evacuate animals from any of the buildings.

The training also covered the extreme situations such as flooding and where the team can find the emergency protocols and contacts.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We hold training sessions for the team and have speakers come in to cover a range of subjects and this morning we held a fire drill and covered how important it is not only to ensure we care for all humans on site, but also how we would work with the fire service to evacuate animals if a building was ever at risk.”

“Earlier this year we had training from Guernsey Fire Service and we are always looking for those with skills and knowledge that can help train our team and love to hear from those that can help.”

“This morning didn’t just cover the fire procedures we also covered other emergency situations.”

“If anyone can help provide training sessions for our team please do email me [email protected] or call 257261.”

“For those wanting to volunteer our next induction is next Tuesday at 630pm and all are welcome.”

“For those wanting to see some of the animals in our care you can walk around for a small donation 7 days a week 11am to 4pm.”
