Ferret Rescued From Top of St Peter Port Scaffolding
The GSPCA is appealing for the owner of a young male ferret after an unusual rescue in St Peter Port yesterday morning saw the animal safely brought down from scaffolding at the Arcade Building.
The ferret, now named Chocolat, was spotted at the top of the scaffolding by workers who carefully rescued him and brought him safely down to ground level. GSPCA Animal Collection Officer and Head of Marine Mammals Geoff George and Kevin Beausire GSPCA Maintenance Manager and Collection Officer, who were diverted from another collection call, attended the scene to help secure the ferret in a basket before transporting him safely to the Animal Shelter.
While the GSPCA has rescued stray and unwanted ferrets from locations across Guernsey over the years, this is believed to be the charity's highest-ever ferret rescue and the first from scaffolding.
Most stray and feral ferrets are found in more rural areas of the island, making the St Peter Port location particularly unusual.
The young male ferret appears to have had very little human handling and may be feral. As with all found animals, Chocolat will remain at the GSPCA for the required 21-day holding period to allow time for an owner to come forward. If unclaimed, the GSPCA will look to find him a suitable new home.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
"In all my years at the GSPCA, I can honestly say this is the highest ferret rescue we have ever been involved with and certainly the first one rescued from scaffolding. We are very grateful to the workers at the Arcade Building who first spotted Chocolat and safely brought him down before our team arrived.”
"Geoff and Kevin were diverted from another collection and quickly attended to ensure the ferret was safely secured and transported back to the shelter. Thankfully, Chocolat appears to be in good health despite his adventure high above St Peter Port.”
"Most of the stray and feral ferrets we are called to help are found in rural locations, so finding one in the middle of St Peter Port is highly unusual. We would love to reunite Chocolat with his owner if he has one, and we are appealing for anyone with information to contact the GSPCA.”
"If no owner comes forward during the holding period, we will assess Chocolat and look to find him a suitable forever home. Ferrets can make wonderful pets in the right environment and we currently have several looking for homes through our rehoming programme."
