On Thursday last week the first ever animal was officially adopted from the new multi purpose animal welfare building.

We officially received the keys of the new build on the 17th July and since then a number of cats have come to stay in the new build.

There are still a number of small jobs ongoing so the build is not yet fully operational and we still need to move in fully from the 5 areas the new build replaces.GSPCA kitten Guernsey Ammi new home

On the 28th July 3 cats and 9 kittens arrived in the new facility.  All were rescued by the RSPCA along the south coast of England and came from the RSPCA Stubbington Ark where they have 200 cats and kittens in their care.

Since then they have been assessed and matched up with new homes from those families on our waiting list.

The first to be rehomed was Ammi Amzurah a 9 week old black kitten who has 1 brother and 2 sisters.

We have already been told that Ammi is doing extremely well and has already made friends with a bunny that lives in her new home.

Yesterday the second two kittens were rehomed Noah Ark and Nala Nahlab from the same litter.

All the kittens have loved their time in the new facility and the families have been very impressed.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "All of the cats have been a real joy to care for in the our new facility at the GSPCA."Noah and Nala the kittens adopted at the GSPCA in Guernsey

"It is always wonderful when you can follow the whole story of an animals care, and with all of the kittens since they arrived it has been wonderful to look after them, meet the new owners and wave them off to wonderful new homes."

"Ammi Amzurah was the first kitten to go to her new home and we have already received pictures of her looking very happy with their rabbit."

"Nala and Noah were the second kittens to be rehomed from the new build and we have already had 11 cats boarding with us and even a kitten stop over from Alderney on route to her new home."

"We are hoping to have the facility fully operational in the next two months and looking forward to an official opening in the Autumn."

"We have many cats looking for homes and a waiting list for kittens and if you are looking to adopt a new pet please do get in touch."

Story of the first ever cat in the new facility -

The first ever cat arrived on the 18th July called 'Estra' who was adopted from the GSPCA last year.  Estra had been living in a greenhouse before being brought into the Shelter as a stray.

When she arrival as a stray last year she was very friendly and although had a few health issues and needed to see the vet a few times, after a few months of care she was found a fantastic loving new home where she has been since August 2014.

When the owners brought Estra into the Shelter for her boarding stay she quickly made herself at home.  Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager bedded Estra in for them, then gave the owners a tour of the new facilities and before he wished them well on their holiday they said a quick farewell to Estra who appeared very happy.

Through the week many other cats came to visit including Cameron, Scribble, Nemo, Dodge, Harley and Monty, all of which have enjoyed their stay in the new facility.

Part of the multi purpose animal welfare building has a section which is for boarding cats.  Each pen has an inside and outside pen with the inner pens having underfloor heating and fresh air pumped into the runs.  Also they have a number of shelves to use the height and a number of toys, comfy bedding and either the morning or evening sunshine to bask in when its out.

On Wednesday the 22nd July the first welfare cat arrived in the new facility by plane.  Charly the kitten arrived from Alderney to stop for the night before heading to her new home.

The very friendly kitten was collected the next day and is settling extremely well after being hand reared at Alderney Animal Welfare Rescue.

As the finishing touches are being done to the new build we are slowly moving in trailing each of the sections to ensure it is all in order and the team are overwhelmed by how well the animals are enjoying their stay.

On the 28th July a number of cats arrived from the RSPCA Stubington Ark in Portsmouth as they are inundated with cats.  We have a very close relationship with the Solent Branch of the RSPCA as a number of our GSPCA staff have carried out training with their team.

Currently we have a waiting list for adopters interested in young cats and kittens and once they have had their assessment we will be in touch with those that are on our files.

On the 29th July the first kittens were born at the GSPCA in 2015 and to date we hadn't had a single kitten in for rehoming, although we have helped countless adult cats in need, strays, those sick and injured as well as those not being cared for.

Many of the cats are in our existing buildings and we hope to have moved completely into the new building by the end of the Summer.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It's been fantastic moving into the new multi purpose animal welfare building and the first cat Estra had a wonderful stay and was a joy to look after."

"Estra's owners were so pleased with the new accommodation for boarding cats and were delighted how happy she was when they came to collect her on Saturday."

"Every owner that has boarded their cats in the new building have been so happy with the facility and care of their beloved pets."

"It was also great to help out Alderney Animal Welfare Trust who were rehoming Charly a little black and white female kitten in Guernsey which needed an overnight stay before going to her new home where we have heard she is doing very well."

"We have many older cats looking for homes at the Shelter which will be moving into the new build over the next few months."

"Last month we had 12 new arrivals from the RSPCA in Portsmouth who we are helping as they are inundated with cats and kittens."

"We have a waiting list of homes lined up for the new arrivals and once we are happy they are ready we will be calling those with their names down."

"Earlier today we had our first kittens born at the GSPCA and we are all being kept very busy at the GSPCA."

More about the new build -

The new build is the first phase of our 10 year Rebuild and Redevelopment Plan.  We have launched our wish list for equipment for the new build some of which you can already see on our Amazon Wish List and we continue to fund raise for the new build and other rebuild projects.

With over 140 years of helping animals in Guernsey and being based at our current location since 1929, the GSPCA provides around the clock care and rescue at the Animal Shelter in St. Andrews.

The Shelter has had many developments over the years moving with the times to help the varied species that come through the door.  Some of the structures date back to the 1950s and are becoming difficult to run and maintain.  The team at the GSPCA and its Managing Committee have been working hard planning for the future.

The new welfare building will help provide a safe haven for animals like Daisy, a cat brought into the GSPCA byDoris GSPCA Guernsey cat our Welfare Officer with multiple eye problems only a few weeks ago.  Daisy has now had an operation on her eyes, and with the care of the team at the GSPCA she will soon be in a loving new home.

When complete the new building will comprise of a two storey structure that will have multi-purpose use including welfare cattery, quarantine, isolation, animal reception, laundry, electrical substation and more.

It is without doubt the biggest project we have undertaken at the GSPCA.  It is an essential but costly undertaking and to go hand in hand with this project we are launching our exclusive Build Partner programme.

What is the objective of the GSPCA Build Partner programme?

The Build Partner programme is designed to meet the building costs associated with our new £1.3 million multi-purpose animal welfare building.  The building is to replace five existing structures that have become unusable with age.

Our new building will incorporate a welfare cattery, quarantine and isolation facilities, and a secure transfer location while also providing logistical and organisational spaces and facilities for the day-to-day running of the GSPCA.

How does the GSPCA Build Partner programme work?

  • it is a simple partnership designed to meet the funding requirements for the new welfare building
  • 500 individuals or corporate partners
  • join for a 5 year partnership donating £520 annually (options of multiple partnerships, a one off payment or donating monthly are available)

What benefits do I gain as a GSPCA Build Partner?

  • the knowledge that you are actively supporting animal welfare and the communityGspca floor plan Guernsey new build Animal Shelter
  • V.I.P. invitation to the opening of the new facilities
  • exclusive rights to use the GSPCA Build Partner logo
  • updates on the progress of the new building
  • should you wish, a personal / corporate profile on the GSPCA website
  • recognition of your support within the new building if desired

How to I become a GSPCA Build Partner?

  • Complete a simple Deed of Covenant and Standing Order form that are available on our website at www.gspca.org.gg or by calling the Shelter on 257261 or by emailing [email protected]

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager said “We are extremely excited at the GSPCA as this new build will replace five structures at the Animal Shelter, some of which date back to the 1950’s.”

“The staff and volunteers ensure all the animals get excellent care at the GSPCA despite the age of many of the buildings, and the New Build is a way we can look to the future of animal care in Guernsey and continue to lead by example.”

“The GSPCA exclusive Build Partner programme is a way that an individual or company can be part of the GSPCA’s future and contribute to something that will stand and make a big difference to animals’ lives and support the community for years to come.”

“Every year thousands of animals are rescued, rehabilitated, rehomed, reunified with their owners, or released back into the wild through the GSPCA: from Monkey a cat with a number of health problems and has diabetes, Jessie the stray beagle to the seal pups Trinity and Eden who were released from Jethou last year.”

“Every day at the GSPCA we make a difference to animals and the community.  We are extremely proud of the work that goes on 24 hours a day 7 days a week and with our wonderful history we hope you can join us in looking to the future.”

"We are all looking forward to the Build Handover Ceremony on Friday and we are busy preparing the Animal Shelter for our visitors."

"We have invited key supporters and Build Partners of the new multi purpose animal welfare building to the Build Handover Ceremony and once we are fully in and working the new build we will organise an official opening."

"We must say a special thank you to Bucktrouts who have kindly donating drinks for the event."

"Our Build Partners are joining us in a vital and essential project and we are extremely grateful to each and every one."

John Knight GSPCA President said “The GSPCA has played a major role in the community for the past 142 years, continually evolving and adapting to ensure that it maintains its work for animal welfare, through thick and thin.”

“Some of our welfare buildings and structures are now inefficient and have become difficult to maintain.”

“This new building will replace five aged structures at the Shelter and is a major step in the redevelopment of the Shelter.”

“This new build is a major investment in our future and we need help from the community to aid us in this redevelopment programme.”

“I urge our business leaders and supporters to get behind us, and support this necessary project through our new Build Partner Programme, a scheme designed to fund our new welfare building at an affordable cost.”
