Foundations Begin for New Kennel Block as GSPCA's Biggest Build Appeal Reaches Another Major Milestone

The GSPCA is celebrating another exciting milestone in its #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal as work begins on the foundations of a brand-new kennel block while the roof of the new Wildlife Hospital nears completion.

The charity's ambitious redevelopment project is transforming animal welfare facilities in Guernsey and will help ensure the GSPCA can continue caring for thousands of animals every year for generations to come.

As part of the development, ten older kennels were demolished to make way for the new Wildlife Hospital. In their place, a purpose-built kennel block featuring 12 modern welfare and isolation kennels is now taking shape.

The new facilities will provide greatly improved accommodation for the many dogs who come through the GSPCA's doors each year. From stray dogs and those rescued from cruelty and neglect, to animals requiring emergency veterinary care, rehabilitation, boarding services or support before finding their forever homes, the new kennel block will play a vital role in delivering the highest standards of welfare.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:

"It is incredibly exciting to see the Wildlife Hospital roof nearing completion and, at the same time, to watch the foundations for our new kennel block being put in place. Every stage of this project brings us a step closer to creating facilities that will benefit animals in Guernsey for decades to come."

"The ten kennels that previously stood on this site served us well for many years, but the new twelve welfare and isolation kennels will offer vastly improved accommodation and flexibility for the wide range of dogs that come into our care. Whether they are strays, victims of cruelty, dogs requiring emergency support, animals awaiting rehoming or those staying with us for boarding, these facilities will help us provide the very best care possible."

"The GSPCA helps thousands of dogs every year and this investment is about ensuring we can continue to meet their needs long into the future. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal so far and we hope the community will continue to help us make this once-in-a-generation project a reality."

The new kennel facilities have been carefully designed to improve welfare standards, provide dedicated isolation areas when needed and create a better environment for both animals and the staff and volunteers who care for them.

Seb Goman, GSPCA Senior Animal Care Assistant and Welfare Officer, who heads the kennels and dog rehoming department, said:

"For those of us who work directly with the dogs every day, seeing this development progress is fantastic. The new kennels will make a huge difference to the welfare of the dogs in our care and allow us to better meet the needs of everything from lost strays arriving at the shelter to dogs recovering from illness or injury."

"Having dedicated modern welfare and isolation facilities will enhance the care we provide and support the successful rehabilitation and rehoming of many dogs each year. Every dog that comes through our doors deserves the best possible chance, and these new facilities will help us achieve that."

"We are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed towards the appeal. The support from the island community is helping to build a brighter future for dogs and all the other animals that rely on the GSPCA."

The GSPCA's redevelopment includes a new Wildlife Hospital and upgraded animal care facilities designed to meet growing demand for the charity's services and improve animal welfare standards across the island.
