Just after lunch time today the GSPCA were called out to St Peter Port to a possible poorly young grey seal pup.
GSPCA team member Neil Hughes was dispatched and made his way to Castle Cornet where was indeed faced with a very thin young seal.
Geoff George Head of Marine Mammals at the GSPCA joined Neil and despite being located in quite a difficult [position on the rocks the GSPCA managed to approach and rescue the very thin and poorly seal pup who is only a few weeks of age.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "Earlier today the team were called out to a poorly grey seal pup at Castle Cornet.”
“GSPCA team members Geoff and Neil attended and rescued the 3 week old seal pupwhich is now in the intensive care area for seals at the GSPCA.”
“The pup will need round the clock care and Geoff will be in and out the Shelter through the evening with support to do all we can for the very thin poorly pup which is yet to be named.”
Geoff George Head of Marine Mammals at the GSPCA said “The seal pup is extremely thin at only 16kgs and will need around the clock care.”
“It is very early to say how the pup will respond but we are administering fluids and medications every couple of hours and we are all doing our best.”
“We can say that Shakespeare is doing well and eating fish and the other two seal pups will soon be fit for the wild.”
Steve continued “The recent rough weather caused many wildlife casualties and when around the coast to keep a close eye for other poorly animals.”
"We have some great web pages with advice on what to do if you see a seal pup which are being born at this time of year or oiled birds, although we are only a call away on 257261."
"With young seal pups the main piece of advice is to please not approach them as you can scare their mother away and if you see one to please call us on 257261 and we can make sure they are safe or give advice."
"For those out with dogs please don't let them approach seal pups as this can scare their mothers off and if they were to bite your dog and cause a nasty injury."
"As well as wildlife we have to ensure our own pets and animals are safe and secure with the high winds as we often see dogs escaping from gates being blown open to farm animals escaping."
"We are busy at the GSPCA ensuring our animals are safe with the high winds and cold weather we have at this time of year."
“With the other two seal pups from last season we hope to get them back to the wild soon namely Luna C and Auora, but Shakespeare has a long way to go.”
