This weekend the GSPCA held a very special event to mark their milestone of 10 going into 151 years.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager and Ball organisor said “On Saturday 10th February 2024 over 200 islanders and visitors descended on St Pierre park Hotel for an incredible night of celebrations to mark the 150th year of the GSPCA going into the 151st year.”

“The 10th February was not only the second day of #GSPCAPurpleWeek ( https://www.gspca.org.gg/page/gspca-purple-week ) which is the annual celebrations for the GSPCA to mark another year since being founded in 1873, but it was the 10th February 1873 when the first islanders got together to talk about founding the GSPCA to help prevent animal cruelty and promote kindness and 4 days later the charity was created.”

“Over the last year we have held many events and had special surprises to mark this incredible century and a half of helping 100’s of 1000’s of animals and of course countless members of our community in so many ways.”

“The event being held was our 150 year GSPCA Ball and what a night it was.”

“There was a lot of organising and preparations and we are still seeing funds and support coming in from the event from the auction to offers of support.”

“A special mention has to go to our Sponsors Breton who were an incredible support and also took 3 tables on the evening and it was great to see them enjoy the night.”

“We must thank all of the 200+ guests that attended, St Pierre Park Hotel for not only looking after us, but also their incredible gifts for our auction.”

“A special mention to Cendrine from St Pierre Park who was a fabulous staff member is supporting and even joining us for the night and we wish her well on her travels.”

“Dave behind the auction website helped us raise £1000’s of additional funding and what a great way to raise funds it was and to see it still check out although the lots have closed and we are contacting those lucky bidders www.bidlive.net/gspca .”

“One of the main items donated that raised an incredible amount was a full body scan donated very kindly by First Contact Health and it was wonderful for them to join us.”

“Annette from Save the Date did an amazing job decorating the room and helped in so many ways.”

“Peter and Suzy Rose who helped with the official photos and collecting donations on the sumup and the pictures can be seen on a link which is being sent out and to obtain the pictures please email me on [email protected] after donating £5 per picture by calling 257261 or online https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA) .”

“A thanks to Guy Hardill for his photo skills also.”

“Also a huge thanks to Mark Guillou for his tech support and Louis from GSY Production Services who was amazing in helping ensure the night and tech worked so well.”

“The entertainment, much of which was a surprise included local acts like GU10, The Retro Dance Company and the Arabesque Dance Company which really helped liven up a already very lively room.”

“As well as the raffle there were sweets on the tables to buy to a tombola raffle which every table won many prizes, helping raise extra funds.”

“We played a game of heads and tails which was great fun and just after 9am our key note speaker Mike Dilger entertained and talked to the room about his wildlife adventures and career, from the amazing animals he has seen to some of the unpleasant ailments he has had from his travels.”

“We got to show Mike and his lovely wife the GSPCA, the animals and many of the team as well as some of the local sites while he was here and it was a true pleasure to get to know him and for him to be part of our big event.”

“Huge thanks to Mike and his wife for traveling over.”

“After the closing remarks and thanks to all that helped make a great event the main performance act all the way from Milton Keynes were the King B Blues Brothers who really helped entertain the crowd and get them all dancing.”

“While they were performing Memories Photo Booth helped with providing some very funny photos, thank you Shane.”

“That wasn’t all as before everyone had to go home Tome Le Page better known as The Rocques DJ helped keep everyone dancing and for many they wanted to carry on until the early hours but sadly at midnight we had end the evening with a lot of smiles, laughter and thanks to all that made it so special.”

Mike Dilger keynote speaker said ‘My invitation to GSPCA’s 150th anniversary also represented my first time in Guernsey, and my wife and I had such a terrific time it got me thinking as to why I’d waited so long to visit?”

“We had a blast for our entire stay and thanks so much to Steve Byrne and all his staff for the wonderful VIP tour around GSPCA’s shelter to meet many of its residents and guests… and who could forget ‘Barnacle Bill’ the loggerhead turtle?”

“What a star!”

“I was also delighted to have been asked to speak to all the assembled guests at the 150th Anniversary Ball about my passion for the natural world - talking about pushing at an open door!”

“It was a terrific night and raised a very healthy sum towards the GSCPA’s new building project in its 151st year.”

“I promise here and now that I won’t wait as long to come back!”

Steve continued “We have had amazing feedback and still raising funds from the event but we must be near to around £10,000 as well of lots of other incredible support thanks to the event.”

“There are so many to thank that helped make this such a special event, our heart felt thanks from all of the team and the animals at the GSPCA.”

“The event as well as raising funds, celebrating #GSPCAPurpleWeek, our 150 years, it was also to promote the BIGGEST BUILD APPEAL which is to replace many old buildings with a Wildlife Hospital, Welfare and Isolation Kennels, Ferret Unit and new utility areas for the 1000’s of animals we help each year and we are currently going to tender for these much needed facilities.”

“All this week is #GSPCAPurpleWeek so please do get involved in supporting us to help us help animals and the community for another 150 years.”
