GSPCA Appeals for New Volunteer Animal Ambulance Wardens

The GSPCA is appealing for new volunteers to join its dedicated Animal Ambulance Warden team and help cover Wednesday and Friday evening shifts, supporting animals in need across Guernsey.

The GSPCA's volunteer wardens play a vital role in the charity's emergency animal rescue service, providing assistance outside of normal Shelter hours. The service operates from 6pm until 8am, with volunteer wardens carrying the emergency phone and responding to animal welfare incidents, injured wildlife, strays and other urgent calls.

Anyone interested in joining the team can find out more at:

To register your interest, please complete the online application form:

Alternatively, if you have any questions, please email [email protected].

As well as recruiting new volunteers, the GSPCA is also appealing for support towards two replacement animal ambulances. The charity's main ambulance has now travelled more than 130,000 miles over the last decade and has helped rescue, transport and relocate tens of thousands of animals during that time.

Whilst wardens have access to an animal ambulance when on duty, some also use their own vehicles to assist animals in need.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:

"Our volunteer Animal Ambulance Wardens provide an incredible service to the community and to the thousands of animals we help every year. We have an exceptionally dedicated team and we are hugely thankful to every one of them, just as we are to all of our staff and volunteers.

"We have had an exceptionally busy summer, with many evenings involving multiple call-outs and rescue requests. As we move into winter and the daylight hours become shorter, the number of emergency calls generally begins to decrease and there can even be evenings where no call-outs are received at all.

"Covering the emergency phone does not always mean having to attend an incident. Many calls can be resolved by providing advice, such as asking someone to safely bring an animal to the Shelter, contact their vet, or call us the following morning when appropriate.

"Volunteering as a warden is incredibly rewarding and provides a unique opportunity to help animals across Guernsey. Full training and support are provided, and we would love to hear from anyone who may be interested in joining the team, particularly for Wednesday and Friday evening cover.

"At the same time, we are looking ahead and raising funds for two replacement ambulances. Our main ambulance has now exceeded 130,000 miles and has been involved in helping tens of thousands of animals over the past ten years. It has been an amazing vehicle, but we need to ensure we can continue to provide this vital service into the future."

The GSPCA encourages anyone with a passion for animal welfare, good local knowledge and the ability to remain calm under pressure to consider joining the charity's volunteer emergency warden team.
