The GSPCA is delighted to announce the installation of a brand-new cycle shelter at our St Andrews Animal Shelter, made possible thanks to generous support from the Channel Islands Coop and the collaborative efforts of several local partners.

The new shelter provides a dedicated space for both staff and visitors to safely store their bicycles, encouraging greener travel to the shelter and supporting the GSPCA’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.

The project was made possible with the help of Breton, who ensured a solid base was in place, and the States of Guernsey, who assisted with delivery logistics by coordinating with their own recent bike shelter order. A special thanks also goes to Neale and the team from Red Box, who swiftly and professionally erected the shelter, which is already proving popular and well-used.

The shelter has been installed on the site of a former gas tank, which was removed in preparation for the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal —a major redevelopment project aimed at transforming the shelter. As part of this appeal, the GSPCA is not only working to raise £3.7 million for the build but is also exploring solar power and other sustainable initiatives to further reduce its environmental footprint.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, commented:

“I cycle a lot myself, and it’s absolutely wonderful to see this new cycle shelter in place. It’s already being well used and helps reduce vehicle traffic on Guernsey’s roads. We’re incredibly grateful to the Channel Islands Coop, Breton, the States of Guernsey, and Red Box for making this possible. Every step we take to improve the shelter and support our environment is a step forward for the animals and the community we serve.”

The GSPCA continues to strive for improvements that benefit both the welfare of animals and the wider community. This new cycle shelter is a small but meaningful part of a much larger vision for a more sustainable future.
