The GSPCA was honoured to attend the Saffrey Rotary Walk awards and presentation evening held at Government House, celebrating the incredible fundraising efforts of participants and supporters.

Representing the GSPCA was Karen Girdlestone, who has been a dedicated committee member for nearly a decade. This event marked Karen’s final official duty before her move to the UK, and the GSPCA extends heartfelt thanks for her years of commitment to animal welfare in Guernsey.

During the evening, Karen was presented with a cheque of over £2,000, generously donated towards the installation of new sinks in the Wildlife Hospital, part of the ongoing #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal. This vital contribution will help improve facilities for the care of wildlife in the new hospital currently under construction.

Also in attendance was Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, who joined the event as team leader of the Guernsey Freemason team. Alongside Matt Tostevin, Steve was presented with a trophy in recognition of the team’s outstanding fundraising achievement—raising more than any other team involved in the walk.

Karen Girdlestone shared:

“It’s been a privilege to be part of the GSPCA and to support such an incredible cause over the years. I’m deeply touched to have attended this event as my final duty and to see the continued generosity towards the Wildlife Hospital. Thank you to everyone who has supported the GSPCA and helped make a difference for animals in Guernsey.”

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, added:

“It was a proud moment to stand with Matt and accept the trophy on behalf of the Guernsey Freemason team. Their dedication and generosity are truly inspiring. We’re also incredibly grateful to Karen for her years of service and to the Saffrey Rotary Walk for their continued support of our biggest build yet. Every donation helps us move closer to completing the Wildlife Hospital and improving the lives of animals across the island.”

The GSPCA continues to raise funds for the £3.7 million redevelopment, with the Wildlife Hospital foundations now underway. To support the appeal, visit www.gspca.org.gg or consider donating through the Buy A Brick campaign.
