Today we are pleased to announce that domestic birds that come in for rehoming now have a lovely aviary with a view to live in and stretch their wings.

With the new animal welfare legislation now a month after coming into force and the GSPCA striving to lead an example in animal care four birds today moved into their new home.

The wooden framed aviary welcomed two budgies and two cockatiels who are at the Shelter in need of a home.

Cockatiels Rosie and Jim were the first to fly up onto the perches, closely followed by Peter and Paula the budgies.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It was a fantastic experience for all of the team at the GSPCA today to see the four birds let into their new home before we can find them their forever home."

"Budgies and cockatiels come from Australia and in the wild live in massive flocks so to have these types of birds it is always best to keep them in groups and large flights wherever possible."

"Now these four birds have experienced the life of an aviary it would be unfair to rehome them back into a cage, so we are looking for an aviary or flight style home for them."

"A great way to feed your pet birds is to use natural plants as they are full of goodness, but always ensure they are clean and safe."

"We have tied some seeding grasses in their flight which not only gives them something to forage for but helps ensure a good diet."

Sarah Creasey Animal Welfare and Education Officer said "It was wonderful to see the birds in their new flight at the GSPCA today."

"The new legislation for animals in Guernsey is based around the five freedoms and an aviary can give birds a much better quality of life."

The five freedoms are:

-  freedom from thirst, hunger and malnutrition,

- freedom from discomfort,

- freedom from pain, injury and disease,

- freedom from fear and distress,

- freedom to express normal behaviour patterns.
