International Charity Day Celebrates 153 Years of GSPCA Caring for Animals 24 Hours a Day, 365 Days a Year
On International Charity Day, the GSPCA is celebrating the incredible support of the Guernsey community and highlighting the vital work that takes place around the clock to help animals in need.
For 153 years, the GSPCA has been there for animals across the Bailiwick, with the charity having proudly served from its St Andrew's home for the past 98 years. Every day and night, the charity's dedicated team, volunteers and supporters work together to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals whilst providing emergency assistance whenever it is needed.
The reality of animal welfare never stops, and neither does the GSPCA.
Late last night, GSPCA Ambulance Officer and Head of Marine Mammals Geoff George rescued an injured barn owl, now named Barney, after concerns were raised for the bird's welfare. Barney is receiving care and assessment at the GSPCA Wildlife Hospital as staff work to give him the best possible chance of recovery.
At the same time, there is encouraging news from the temporary seal unit, where Delilah, a young common seal pup undergoing rehabilitation, continues to go from strength to strength. Since arriving into the charity's care, Delilah has gained more than 3kg, a significant milestone in her recovery journey as the team prepares her for an eventual return to the wild.
These are just two examples of the hundreds of animals the GSPCA helps every year, ranging from wildlife rescues and emergency callouts to caring for abandoned, injured and vulnerable domestic animals.
GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:
"International Charity Day is a wonderful opportunity to thank everyone who supports the GSPCA and makes our work possible. For 153 years the charity has been helping animals across our islands, and for 98 years we have proudly operated from St Andrew's.
"Whether it is an injured barn owl rescued late at night, a seal pup gaining strength, a lost dog, an abandoned cat or a hedgehog in need of urgent care, our team is here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. None of this would be possible without the generosity of our supporters, volunteers, fundraisers, members and businesses who stand alongside us."
