GSPCA Educational Visits Help Inspire the Next Generation of Animal Carers

The GSPCA has been delighted to welcome and visit a number of local youth and school groups in recent weeks as part of its ongoing commitment to education and animal welfare awareness across Guernsey.

Recent educational visits and talks have included a tour for St Martin's Girl Guides on 22nd May, visits from Amherst Primary School Year 2 classes on 8th, 9th and 12th June, and a visit from the Beavers and Squirrels on 8th June. Each group enjoyed learning more about the work of the GSPCA and meeting some of the animals currently in the charity's care.

On 3rd June, GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne visited Little Rays Nursery with two very special guests – Hilda, a resident tortoise at the GSPCA who is over 90 years old, and Scramble, a much younger tortoise.

Hilda came into the care of the GSPCA through a legacy left by her owner, highlighting the importance of planning for pets' futures and the vital role that gifts left in wills can play in helping animals. The GSPCA is able to provide advice and support for those wishing to ensure their pets are cared for in the future should the need arise.

Each educational visit is unique, with no two tours ever being the same due to the variety of animals that come through the GSPCA's doors every day. From wildlife casualties and rescued pets to exotic species, every visit offers a different opportunity for learning and discovery.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:

"Education has always been a very important part of the GSPCA's work. Today's children are our future and will be the people caring for Guernsey's animals in years to come. By helping young people learn about responsible pet ownership, wildlife welfare and kindness towards animals, we can help create a better future for animals across our island."

He added:

"We have been delighted to welcome St Martin's Girl Guides, Amherst Primary School, the Beavers and Squirrels to the shelter, as well as visiting Little Rays Nursery. Seeing the enthusiasm and interest from young people is always incredibly rewarding."

Speaking about the nursery visit, Steve said:

"Hilda was a huge hit with the children. At over 90 years old she has an amazing story and helps us explain how animals can need care and support throughout their lives. Hilda came into our care through her owner's legacy, which also gave us a great opportunity to explain the importance of making provisions for pets in wills. We can help owners plan for their pets' future should they no longer be able to care for them."

Steve continued:

"With every tour being different, there is always something new to see and learn. Whether it's wildlife rehabilitation, caring for rescue animals or learning about the responsibilities of owning a pet, we aim to make every visit both educational and enjoyable."

The GSPCA welcomes enquiries from nurseries, schools, youth organisations, scouts, guides, community groups and other organisations interested in learning more about animal welfare and the work of the charity.
