GSPCA Invests in Kennel and Cattery Improvements for Animals in Our Care
The GSPCA is undertaking a series of improvements to its kennels and cattery over the coming weeks to further enhance the facilities used by hundreds of animals each year.
The work is being carried out by specialist company Kennelbuild, which has extensive experience in designing and installing animal welfare facilities. Every effort is being made to keep disruption to a minimum while ensuring the highest standards of care continue for all animals staying at the GSPCA.
The improvements will benefit not only animals boarding with the charity, but also stray animals, pets awaiting new homes, animals receiving care following cruelty investigations, and those requiring quarantine or specialist support.
Within the cattery, special clear weather protection panels are being installed on the outside balcony areas. These panels can be removed during good weather when required, while providing protection during periods of wind and rain. The work in the rehoming cattery has been made possible thanks to a very generous donation from a supporter.
The kennels are also receiving improvements, including the replacement of sections of mesh work and upgrades to sleeping and bedding areas to provide greater comfort for the dogs in our care.
The GSPCA's kennel facilities, opened in 2005, and cattery, opened in 2015, already provide some of the finest animal welfare accommodation in the Channel Islands. These latest improvements will ensure the facilities continue to offer a safe, comfortable and enriching environment for many years to come.
GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:
"We are always looking at ways to improve the care and comfort of the animals that come through our doors. Whether animals are staying with us for boarding, have been found as strays, are awaiting their forever homes or are with us as part of a cruelty investigation, they deserve the very best facilities we can provide.”
"We are incredibly grateful to the supporter whose kind donation is helping fund the cattery improvements in our rehoming area, and to Kennelbuild for carrying out the works with such care and professionalism.”
"Whilst these important improvements are taking place, work is continuing on our #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal as we progress plans for the new Wildlife Hospital and kennel base. Every donation helps us improve animal welfare in Guernsey and provide the best possible care for thousands of animals each year."
Helen Sharman, who helps run the GSPCA boarding cattery, said:
"We strive to ensure every boarding cat receives the very best of care throughout their stay with us. Many owners tell us how much they appreciate the facilities we offer, and these additional improvements will further enhance the comfort and wellbeing of the cats that stay in our care. It is wonderful to see continued investment in the cattery for both boarding and rescue animals."
AJ, who works within the cattery team, explained the benefits of the new balcony panels:
"The balcony areas are hugely popular with our cats as they allow them to enjoy fresh air, natural light and views outside. During the winter months and periods of extreme weather, however, driving wind and rain can sometimes make those areas less comfortable. These clear panels will provide excellent protection while still allowing cats to enjoy their balconies and the view outside. It is a fantastic improvement for the animals in our care."
Natalie Spicer, who helps care for the dogs at the GSPCA, added:
"The kennel improvements will make a real difference to the dogs staying with us. The upgraded sleeping areas will help provide greater comfort, while the renewal of sections of mesh work will ensure the kennels remain in excellent condition. We are always focused on providing the best possible environment for the dogs in our care and these upgrades are very welcome."
The GSPCA would like to thank everyone who continues to support the charity and its ongoing work caring for Guernsey's animals.
