GSPCA Issues Avian Flu Advice for Bird Owners in Guernsey
With confirmed cases of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) continuing to rise across the UK and Europe, the GSPCA is urging all bird owners in Guernsey to take extra precautions to protect their poultry, pet birds, and the wild birds that visit their gardens.
The States Veterinary Officers advise poultry keepers to remain vigilant and maintain strict biosecurity measures to prevent any local outbreaks. This includes checking import zones if bringing birds into Guernsey and registering your flock to receive updates and guidance.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
“Sadly, each winter in recent years Avian Flu is found throughout Europe. Every day we are called out and receive sick or injured birds, with 2,000–3,000 coming through our doors annually. For those keeping birds outside, it’s really important to keep food and water sources away from wild birds to limit the risk of transmission.”
Key Advice for Bird Owners:
Ali Le Huray GSPCA Supervisor, added:
“We all have a role to play in protecting Guernsey’s bird population. Whether you keep chickens, have pet parrots, or feed garden birds, following biosecurity advice helps prevent the spread of this devastating disease.”
The GSPCA continues to operate with heightened biosecurity and is preparing for its BIGGEST BUILD in history, including a new Wildlife Hospital to care for sick and injured animals.
