GSPCA Issues Reminder as Concerns Raised Over Dogs Exercised attached to a bike in Extreme Heat

The GSPCA is urging pet owners to take extra care during the current spell of hot weather following reports of a dog being exercised while attached by a lead to a bicycle in high temperatures.

The charity is highlighting the serious risks associated with exercising dogs in hot conditions, particularly on sun-heated surfaces.

Hot weather can pose a number of dangers to dogs, including overheating, dehydration, and burned paws. Tarmac and pavements can quickly become extremely hot in direct sunlight and may cause significant injury to a dog’s feet—often in just a short period of time.

The GSPCA is reminding owners that walking or exercising dogs should be done at cooler times of the day, such as early morning or later in the evening, when temperatures are lower and surfaces are safer.

The charity has also received other recent concerns, including reports of dogs being left in vehicles during warm weather. Although thankfully no animals have been harmed, the GSPCA stresses how quickly situations can become dangerous and urges everyone to take appropriate precautions.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said: “With the warmer weather, we are seeing an increase in concerns being raised about animal welfare, including dogs being exercised during the hottest parts of the day. Even with the best intentions, activities like running alongside bikes in high temperatures can put dogs at serious risk, particularly due to heat and hot surfaces.

We would urge all pet owners to plan exercise carefully, avoid the heat of the day, and always consider the temperature of the ground as well as the air. We have also had reports of dogs left in cars, and while fortunately no animals have come to harm that we have found, these situations can escalate very quickly.

If anyone has concerns about an animal, please do contact the GSPCA team on 257261 so we can offer advice or assistance if needed.”

The GSPCA thanks the community for its continued support in helping to protect animals across the island and encourages everyone to remain vigilant during periods of warm weather.
