GSPCA Team Comes Together to Shape the Future of Animal Welfare in Guernsey

Last Wednesday, staff, volunteers and placements from across the GSPCA came together for a special strategy and brainstorming session to review the charity's aims, objectives, values, vision and strategic priorities as it plans for the future. Several team members even attended on their day off, highlighting the dedication and passion shared throughout the organisation.

Facilitated by GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne, the session formed part of a wider strategic review, with the last full review of the charity's strategy having taken place more than five years ago. During the meeting, the team reflected on what the GSPCA does well, identified areas for improvement and explored practical ways to strengthen the charity for the years ahead.

The workshop revisited the GSPCA's mission to prevent cruelty to animals, rescue animals in distress, provide shelter for strays and encourage kindness and consideration towards all animals. Team members also discussed the charity's vision of creating a community where animals are free from abuse, neglect and abandonment, and where people work together to ensure compassionate care for domestic and wild animals.

The day focused on the GSPCA's six strategic pillars:

  • Animal Welfare
  • Team, Membership & Community Support
  • Partnerships & Networks
  • Finance & Sustainability
  • Communication, Education & Awareness
  • Legal & Constitutional Governance

all underpinned by the charity's core values of being Collaborative, Active, Respectful, Inclusive, Nurturing and Grateful.

Throughout the session, attendees celebrated the many strengths of the organisation, including animal welfare and care, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, community engagement, fundraising, customer service, teamwork and volunteer support. The groups then looked at potential improvements, generating a wide range of ideas from simple practical enhancements, such as additional fans in certain areas, through to improving internal communication, volunteering experiences, future facilities and supporting the ongoing #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal.

Many of the ideas discussed will now be explored further and, where appropriate, incorporated into future planning and operational improvements.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:

"It was fantastic to see so many members of the GSPCA family come together to help shape our future, including several people who kindly gave up their day off to attend. The session gave everyone an opportunity to reflect on what we do really well, the challenges we face and, importantly, how we can continue to improve for the animals and community we serve."

"The GSPCA has achieved so much over recent years, but as animal welfare challenges continue to evolve, it is important that we regularly review our aims, objectives and priorities. We received a huge number of constructive suggestions, from small changes that can make a big difference day to day, to longer-term ambitions linked to our facilities, communications and the future development of the charity."

“Further reviews and reflections continue with a survey to the team about to be rolled out to get further ideas and feedback on how we can shape the future.”

"I would like to thank everyone who contributed their thoughts and ideas. Their passion, experience and commitment will help ensure the GSPCA continues to be a leading voice for animal welfare in Guernsey for many years to come."
