GSPCA Thanks Guernsey Mind for Insightful Mindfulness and Mental Wellbeing Awareness Session
The GSPCA would like to extend its sincere thanks to Lisa Ingrouille and the team at Guernsey Mind following an engaging and thought-provoking mindfulness and mental wellbeing awareness session held at the Animal Shelter last week.
Arriving shortly after 10am to set up for the event, Lisa Ingrouille was welcomed by Steve Byrne and Tim Pellett before delivering the session to more than 20 members of the GSPCA team, including staff, placements and volunteers. The workshop explored mental health, wellbeing, stress awareness, supportive practices and the range of help available locally.
Mental wellbeing is an important topic for everyone, but particularly for those working in animal welfare where emotions can range from the highest highs to some very challenging circumstances. The GSPCA team experiences the joy of reuniting lost pets with their families, seeing animals find loving new homes, and helping wildlife recover and return to the wild. However, the charity also supports people through the loss of beloved pets via its cremation service, investigates cases of animal cruelty, and can be faced with animals arriving from difficult or neglectful situations. In addition, the charity assists thousands of people each year, many of whom may be facing their own personal challenges and hardships.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
"We are extremely grateful to Lisa and Guernsey Mind for taking the time to provide such an informative and valuable session for our team. Working in animal welfare can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also expose staff and volunteers to emotionally demanding situations. The session encouraged us all to reflect on the importance of looking after our own wellbeing and recognising when support may be needed. We would like to thank Guernsey Mind for helping us better understand mindfulness, mental health and the support available within our community."
Tim Pellett, Training and Community Officer at the GSPCA, added:
"The session was both interesting and thought-provoking and prompted some excellent discussions amongst our staff, placements and volunteers. We are always looking for ways to support the wellbeing and professional development of our team, and understanding mindfulness and mental health is an important part of that. We would like to thank Lisa for delivering the session and sharing practical advice and information which will benefit those who attended."
As part of its commitment to staff, volunteer and placement development, the GSPCA aims to provide a range of training opportunities each week covering animal welfare, health and safety, personal development and wellbeing topics. The charity is always pleased to hear from trainers and organisations who may be interested in helping provide learning opportunities for the GSPCA team.
For anyone seeking support with their mental wellbeing, Guernsey Mind offers a range of services including awareness programmes, training, supported self-help, support groups and signposting to other services. The charity also provides guidance on managing stress, anxiety, grief, loneliness and other wellbeing challenges.
