The #GSPCAPurpleWeek started with a visit and kind donation from La Hougette Primary School

On Friday the #GSPCAPurpleWeek kicked off celebrating 146 years and what better way to celebrate than to show over 40 children around the GSPCA.

One of the GSPCA founding principles continues to be education and the GSPCA run tours and talks all year round as well as dog training classes and other educational courses.

In 1925 at a fete held at the Royal Hotel for the GSPCA the Bailiff at the time said 'it's true that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a very necessary institution in any place. But seeing that the Guernsey's Society's policy is education rather than prosecution, it seems that a time is opportune for a change of title. The name could be altered to Society for Promotion of Kindness to Animals.' The name was not change and the policy of education where possible rather than prosecution still remains today.

The children from La Hougette were split into two groups and GSPCA Training and Community Officer Tim Pellett and Animal Care Assistant Will Domaille showed the groups behind the scenes at the GSPCA.

Tim Pellett GSPCA Community and Training Officer said “The boys and girls from La Hougette school who attended the Shelter on Friday had a 90 minute tour with Will and I.”

“The two groups were treated to visiting Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hogs, the Wildlife department and also met with the staff, they went to Bunny Hop and were also met by an in for home dog called Harley as well as Ellie for a 'waggy tail' fuss.”

“They also had a show and tell on our Reptiles with Will.”

“Two pupils Zach and Imogen surprised us with a very kind donation for £111.58, which was money raised form a recent cake sale at the school.”

“All the boys and girls came up with ideas for future fund raising activities, including a sponsored silence although it might have been a someone else who said that, bike ride and run, read-athon, table top sale, making and selling bird feeders.”

“It was a privilege to host such a well mannered and behaved group of 40 children and they asked lots of great questions to keep me on my toes during our first day of #GSPCAPurpleWeek .”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “A huge thank you to the students, teachers, parents and all involved from La Hougette for raising the amazing £111.58 from their recent bake sale.”

“At the end of their tour I went to see them all and thank them for their kindness and find out how their tour went which they all seemed to have really enjoyed.”

“We love to hear from those that would like a tour, educational talk, get involved with #GSPCAPurpleWeek or support us in any way.”

“146 years ago we were founded on one of our core principles being education and it was fantastic to celebrate the start of #GSPCAPurpleWeek with the tours showing La Hougette pupils around the GSPCA.”
