The GSPCA in any one year can help 150 to up 300 cats hit by cars on the road every year and there is no law in place for those that caused the accident to report the injured or in many cases deceased feline.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “On average every year the GSPCA helps between 150 and 200 cats hit by vehicles on our roads every year.”
“In one year the number rose to 300 and in that year there were 5 that I helped in just one night shift.”
“Sadly many are deceased on arrival or even within seconds of being hit but when they are hit there is no law in place for those that have caused the injured or deceased animal to report it.”
“Thankfully most are helped but there are incidents when they are not which can cause unnecessary suffering to the cat that if still alive will likely be in much pain.”
“When we have surveyed islanders on the subject 85+% felt that there should be responsibility to report an injured cat as well as other animals not covered under the current laws.”
“We were recently approached by Kayleigh Mills who has set up a petition on changing this and it is already up to nearly 500 signatures and to support it please visit https://shorturl.at/5YS0V .”
Kayleigh Mills who is organising the petition said “I am trying to change the law for collisions involving cats.”
“I have made a petition and I already have 146 signatures in 24 hours.”
“I understand a lady tried to get the law changed back in 2019 and I am hopeful this time I will be able to get it changed.”
“I would appreciate if you could share my petition on social media and report on it on air so we can get as many signatures as possible. “

Anna Paint GSPCA Supervisor said “We help 100’s of cats every year at the GSPCA of which many are hit by cars and when we here of drivers leaving a scene where there is injured cat and not reporting it to us or the control centre it is so heart breaking.”
“We are here to help any cat when we can and a simple cat could really help save a life.”
Steve continued “Another challenge we face are the issues of those cats not mircohipped.”
“For just £4.99 we can chip your cat here at the GSPCA.”
“When we have been talking to the Candidates and Deputies we have been highlighting both issues which cause upset and distress to owners and all involved.”
“If every person that hit a cat or indeed any animal which often there is no fault and not done with intention would let us know then there would be no need to look at this as an issue but every year, indeed every month there are cases of animals especially cats hit by vehicles which aren’t reported and even left dead in the road.”
