Healthspan Team Lend a Helping Hand at the GSPCA

Three members of the Healthspan team, Emily, Zoe and Louise, swapped their office desks for animal care duties yesterday as they spent a corporate volunteering day helping at the GSPCA.

Arriving mid-morning, the team was welcomed by GSPCA Training and Community Officer Tim Pellett before later in the day given a behind-the-scenes tour of the charity and started with an introduction to the many areas of work carried out each day.

The volunteers quickly got stuck in, beginning by helping sort and organise the many animal baskets used daily to transport and care for animals. They then assisted across several departments, including the kennels, cattery and Wildlife Hospital, where they supported the busy team until 4pm.

Their day included socialising kittens, walking dogs, helping care for ferrets and assisting staff with a variety of tasks which help ensure the smooth running of the charity's operations.

The visit also provided an opportunity for the Healthspan team to see the progress being made on the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal, including the development of the new wildlife hospital and future facilities that will help the charity care for thousands of animals each year.

Tim Pellett said:

"It was fantastic to welcome Emily, Zoe and Louise to the GSPCA. Corporate volunteer days are a wonderful way for businesses to support local charities whilst giving staff an opportunity to experience something completely different from their normal working day. The team were eager to help, got involved in every task we asked of them and made a real difference during a very busy day at the shelter. We are incredibly grateful for their support."

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, added:

"Corporate volunteer days provide invaluable support to the GSPCA and allow people to see first-hand the large variety of work that goes on behind the scenes. From helping socialise animals and walking dogs through to supporting our wildlife hospital and animal care teams, every hour donated helps both our staff and the animals in our care. We are extremely grateful to Emily, Zoe and Louise for giving up their time to help us and hope their experience encourages other businesses and organisations to consider getting involved."

The GSPCA encourages other businesses, organisations and community groups to consider taking part in a corporate volunteering day. There are many ways companies can support the charity, from volunteering and fundraising to sponsoring projects, supporting the GSPCA Wish List and helping with the charity's ongoing fundraising appeals.

The charity is currently fundraising through the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal to create modern facilities for the animals of Guernsey and is also seeking sponsorship to replace two essential animal ambulances.
