Three Stray Tortoises Taken Into GSPCA Care

The GSPCA is appealing for the owners of three stray tortoises that have recently been brought into the Animal Shelter.

The tortoises were found at the following locations:

Epinelle Road
Oatlands Lane
Capelles Road

All three tortoises have been checked for identification, but no microchips have been found.

If you believe one of these tortoises may belong to you, please contact the GSPCA on 257261. Please note that photographic identification will be required before any tortoise can be reunited with its owner.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:

"We have had two tortoises arrive at the Shelter just last night, making them our most recent stray arrivals. Every year, particularly during very warm and sunny weather, it is a regular occurrence for the GSPCA to help lost and escaped tortoises."

"Tortoises are surprisingly good climbers and escape artists, and the warmer weather often encourages them to become more active and travel further than owners might expect."

"On average, the GSPCA helps between 20 and 30 stray tortoises each year. Interestingly, the majority tend to be males, particularly during the warmer months when they are often on the move looking for mates."

"We would encourage tortoise owners to regularly check fencing and garden boundaries, especially during hot weather, and to consider microchipping where appropriate."

"If you have lost a tortoise or found one wandering, we have a dedicated Lost and Found Advice page on our website which offers useful guidance and information on how to report a missing or found animal." [gspca.org.gg]

The GSPCA's Lost and Found Advice page can be found at:

https://www.gspca.org.gg/services/lost-found-advice

The charity receives hundreds of reports of lost and found animals every year and advises anyone who has lost or found a pet to contact the GSPCA Animal Shelter on 01481 257261 as soon as possible. [gspca.org.gg]

Anyone who has information these tortoises or believes they may be their pets is encouraged to call the GSPCA on 257261.
