Huge thanks to the 21 new Dog first Aiders that attended the GSPCA training course this week

On Wednesday the GSPCA held its second Dog First Aid Course of 2022.

It was so well attended we had to hold the training in the large training room we have at the GSPCA.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 25 years working in the field of animal rescue runs the training and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “In May we held our first Dog First Aid Course of 2022 and we had a full house of 19 and on Wednesday we trained a further 21 islanders.”

“From Police Officers to GSPCA team members, members of the public to an assistance dog  we have trained a real variety of individuals wanting to learn how to save dogs lives.”

“The next first aid course is for cats which is on the 30^th November then in 2023 we have set dates during our 150^th GSPCA Purple Week celebrations which will be February and we will run both a dog and cat first aid course.”

“Those attending learnt to save dogs and other animals lives and although we hope those attending never have to use the skills but at least they will now have the knowledge of what to do in many circumstances.”

“We have been running dog and cat first aid courses for over seven years and have trained over 370 participants to help save animals lives.”

"We have ‘Casper’ who is our model first aid dog a bit like the Annie doll many may know for humans and he is a great way to show and learn how to carry out CPR on an unconscious dog although with covid precautions will be used as a model more than for practical."

“From dealing with a dog chocking to heat stroke we cover a huge range of topics and life saving techniques that could really help save a dogs life.”

“We always hope that the skills learned will not be needed but we have been told of circumstances of these skills helping in real life situations.”

"As owners of pets our worst fear is not knowing what to do if our four legged friend has an injury and this training helps pet owners learn and understand ways to help save your pets life."

Cat First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 30^th November 2022 - Ref - Cat 30/11

Dog First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 14th February 2023 - Ref - Dog 14/2

Cat First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Wednesday 15^th February 2023 - Ref - Cat 15/2

More dates will be announced for 2023.

All first aid courses are a minimum £25 donation and you must book your place by 5pm before the course.

Within the sessions you get the chance to learn about what to do if you were faced with an emergency situation with your dog or cat.  All participants receive handouts, a few goodies and a certificate.
