International Cat Day Celebrates the Thousands of Cats Helped by the GSPCA Every Year
Today (8th August), the GSPCA is celebrating International Cat Day by highlighting the thousands of cats and kittens the charity helps every year across Guernsey.
From newborn kittens to the island's oldest cats, family pets to feral colonies, and lost cats reunited with their owners to those sadly requiring end-of-life care, the GSPCA provides support and services for cats throughout every stage of their lives.
Each year the charity deals with thousands of cat-related enquiries, helping with lost and found cats, welfare concerns, rehoming, microchipping, boarding, first aid advice and training, and sadly assisting pet owners when their beloved cats pass away.
GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said:
"International Cat Day is a chance to celebrate one of the world's most loved pets, but also to recognise the huge amount of work that goes into helping cats every single day. From tiny kittens needing specialist care to older cats looking for retirement homes, feral cats requiring management and treatment, and lost cats desperately needing to find their way back home, our team is here to help."
Throughout the year the GSPCA's Animal Shelter teams respond to countless calls involving cats. Some are brought in after being found wandering, others arrive needing veterinary care, while many come to the shelter looking for a second chance through adoption.

The charity continues to encourage all cat owners to microchip their pets as one of the most effective ways to reunite lost cats with their families.
Steve added:
"Microchipping remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to help a lost cat get home quickly. We regularly see cats reunited with their owners because they were microchipped, and we would encourage every cat owner to ensure their details are up to date."

The GSPCA also offers advice and support for lost and found cats, helping islanders know what to do if their pet goes missing or if they find a cat they believe needs assistance.

For those heading away on holiday or needing short-term care for their pets, the GSPCA's popular Cat Hotel provides comfortable boarding facilities with experienced staff on hand to care for feline guests.

As part of its commitment to improving animal welfare, the charity also runs pet first aid courses which include guidance on dealing with common feline emergencies and understanding when urgent veterinary attention is required.

Sadly, the GSPCA also supports cat owners through some of the most difficult moments. Every year hundreds of cats are killed on Guernsey's roads, while many others pass away through illness or old age. The charity's pet cremation service helps provide a respectful farewell to much-loved companions.
