Every year the GSPCA helps hundreds of stray, sick and injured poultry and we currently have 9 chickens, quail and quite a few ducks in our care and one resident.

The main resident is a bird call Major a very fine cockerel who arrived one day as a stray and despite asking around the area he either walked someway to the Shelter or could well have been dumped at the GSPCA.

Major is a very friendly cockerel and enjoys following the team around and is quite enjoying the daffodils which he can be seen walking around at this time of year.

We also have quite a selection of ducks that have made our pond their home so whenever you visit the GSPCA you can often see a broad selection of poultry including quail in our Welcome Aviary in the front car park.

Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “We help many chickens, sick cockerel and baby chicks every year at the GSPCA.”

“We find the hens homes very quickly but often struggle with the sick cockerels which we care for as when they are better few homes are looking for male birds.”

“If anyone is looking for a cockerel we would love to hear from them at the GSPCA.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We help hundreds of poultry every year at the GSPCA.”

“Last year we helped 39 poultry in one day from one home and we do see birds that have been cruelly neglected such as the recent case the Guernsey Police have been appealing for information at La Mare de Carteret Primary School where a chicken was reported to be kicked to death.”

“Poultry can make great companions and can even help provide you with your scrambled or boiled eggs.”

“We have an advice webpage online which you can see by visiting http://www.gspca.org.gg/about/stray-cockerels-hens as we often have calls about stray birds.”

“If you can help offer any of our birds a good home or would like to leave your details in case we have any specific species please do get in touch.”

“We would love to make a large poultry run on site at the GSPCA and if you would like to help us with this please do email me on [email protected], call 01481 257261 or pop into the Shelter.”

“You can visit many of our poultry for a small donation of £2 a person 7 days a week between 11am and 4pm and we often run tours in the school holidays.”
