The GSPCA has recently seen a huge rise in the numbers of rabbits coming into our care.

With 25 rabbits looking for new homes and many more coming in over the next few days Easter was certainly a busy time at the GSPCA for those that care for the rabbits.

Many of the GSPCA rabbits looking for homes are now outside on our Bunny Hop Hill and we are not only appealing for new homes for those in our care but we are also appealing for funds to help build new enclosures for the rabbits at the GSPCA.

You can donate via our giving.gg page or create your own sponsored event or challenge to help our bunnies by visiting - https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA)

Another challenge for not only our bunnies but those around Guernsey have been the warm weather.

Beckie Bailey Animal Care Assistant and Head of the Bunny Unit said “With the weather getting hotter, it's important your bunny stays cool in this heat!”

“Our rabbits have been enjoying tasty ice treats that can be made in 5 minutes!”

“We've simply cut up their favourite fruit/snacks into small chunks, put into an ice cube tray and added some water!”

“Ready to munch on in just a few hours!”

“Make sure you keep an eye on rabbits in hot weather by knowing the signs of overheating/heat stroke.”

“These can include, the ears becoming red, excessive panting or salivating, weak/slow movement, lethargy, confused behaviour or even convulsing.”

“And always make sure your furry friends have plenty of fresh water and lots of shaded areas to rest!”

“We have plenty of rabbits looking for forever homes here at the shelter, if you're interested, simply come to the shelter for a viewing or look at our website, http://www.gspca.org.gg/animals/rabbits .”

Our bunnies are not just Easter Bunnies, they are a 10 year commitment and can cost over £1,000 a year to care for.”

“They need lots of space to run around and need a healthy diet of 80% hay.”

“They are certainly not an easy pet to have for children, although can be a great companion if you give them all they need.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have seen a huge increase in unwanted rabbits recently and in the last year we have helped over 200 bunnies.”

“The two in need of a home that have been here the longest in fact since January last year is Oreo and Wheetabix.”

“As Beckie has said rabbits need a lot of care and we want each person who takes on a rabbit to ensure they are prepared for what can be a 10 year commitment.”

“Sadly many of the rabbits that arrive at the GSPCA are either strays which are never claimed or from those that have said that their children do not want them anymore or they don’t have the time.”

“We even see many each year that are either cruelly treated or not kept in the conditions they need or deserve.”

“We are currently trying to build new outdoor rabbit runs for the bunnies and would love to hear from anyone that would like to support us please call 257261 or email [email protected] .”

“You can see many of our wishes and plans by visiting http://www.gspca.org.gg/about/our-plans-wish-list .”

“To see the GSPCA opening hours to visit the bunnies please get in touch or check out http://www.gspca.org.gg/page/gspca-opening-visiting-times which lets you know it is 11am to 4pm 7 days a week.”

“Thankfully we didn’t have those looking to give bunnies as Easter gifts but for those that would truly love to give a rabbit or rabbits a home we would love to hear from them at the GSPCA.”
