Jolene the Barn Owl—First Resident in our Brand New Aviaries!
Jack Le Moigne GSPCA Animal care Assistant tells us Joelene’s story ‘Jolene the Barn Owl came to the shelter on the 3rd of October after being found caught in chicken wire near some stables at Sunnyside Farm.
She came to the shelter with an injured right leg. It was swollen and her range of motion was severely decreased. Jolene was immediately sent to Route Isabelle Vets for an assessment and X-rays.
The great news was that Jolene’s leg was not broken and it was likely she would recover with some rest and medication.
For three days Jolene stayed in our wildlife shed while being treated with anti-inflammatory medication for pain and to decrease the swelling in her right leg.
On the 4th day she was looking much brighter and was relocated up to our new Goodall Aviary, named after the late Jane Goodall. Jolene is the first bird to be housed in any of our new set of aviaries on Mount Attenborough.
After 3 nights in her new suite and with a belly full of mice, Jolene was released back to her territory. She flew off with strength and grace.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It is wonderful when we can get wildlife back where they belong quickly with Joelene the barn owl.”
“We do see many birds at this time of year suffering with the weather and also trying to find food and shelter and also those that fly into something and daze or stun themselves.”
“Many will remember the awful storms two years ago when we lost a lot of aviaries and put in an insurance claim and also how the Saffery Rotary Walk helped fund new aviaries.”
“Those aviaries are all up and Jolene was the first bird to be cared for in them.”
“The new Wildlife Hospital is our current biggest project and actually the biggest wildlife build ever in our history and there are many ways to support this much needed build and also lots of ways .”
“Our new aviaries are all up and running thanks to the Saffery Rotary Walk and payments and donations after Storm Ciaran but our Wildlife Hospital is still being built so birds like Petal currently go into either hospital or our facilities we have made while the build continues.”
