June is Microchipping Month and the GSPCA and we can chip your pet for £4.99 by appointment

The GSPCA is encouraging pet owners across Guernsey to take advantage of “Microchipping Month” this June, offering microchipping for dogs and cats for just £4.99.

Microchipping is a quick, simple and effective way to ensure lost pets can be reunited with their owners, and the GSPCA is keen to see more islanders take up the service.

Currently, the charity reports that over 90% of stray dogs and more than 80% of stray cats they assist are microchipped, significantly improving the chances of those pets being returned home. However, far fewer other animals are chipped, creating challenges when they are found.

Very small numbers of stray tortoises, ferrets and rabbits are microchipped, which often makes it difficult, and in some cases impossible, to trace their owners.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
“Microchipping is such a simple procedure but makes a huge difference when pets go missing. We see first-hand how quickly microchipped animals can be reunited with their families, which reduces stress for both the animals and their owners.

“It’s fantastic that so many dogs and cats are now chipped, but we would really love to see more people microchipping all pets, including rabbits, ferrets and even tortoises. Sadly, it is not currently a legal requirement to microchip your pet in Guernsey, but it is one of the most effective and responsible steps an owner can take.”

The GSPCA is also reminding owners that having a microchip is only effective if contact details are kept up to date. Changes in phone number, address or ownership must be updated with the microchip database provider.

Steve added:
“We would also urge pet owners to check that their contact details linked to their pet’s chip are correct. If you’re unsure which company your pet is registered with, your vet can usually help you find those details. Keeping this information current is absolutely vital to ensure a happy reunion if your pet ever becomes lost.”

The funds raised through Microchipping Month will support the GSPCA’s ongoing work helping animals across the Bailiwick.
