Les Beaucamps High School Students Begin Wednesday Reading Sessions for Cats at the GSPCA
The GSPCA is delighted to welcome students from Les Beaucamps High School, who have now begun a new weekly initiative visiting the Shelter on Wednesday afternoons to read to the cats in the cattery.
This month marked the start of the programme, and this week saw the second successful session, supervised by GSPCA Supervisor Anna Paint. The initiative combines literacy, wellbeing and animal enrichment—providing quiet companionship for the cats while offering the students a calm, positive space to practice reading.
Creating Calm Through Reading
Under Anna’s guidance, the students spent time reading stories and books to the feline residents, helping the cats to build confidence around people while enjoying the soothing sound of gentle voices.
Anna Paint, GSPCA Supervisor said
“The students were absolutely wonderful—patient, calm, and really engaged with the cats. It was lovely watching them sit quietly and read, giving the cats a relaxed and positive experience. Reading to animals can make such a difference, and the students did a fantastic job in the cattery.”
Education at the Heart of the GSPCA
Education is one of the core values of the GSPCA. Inspiring young people is vital, as the next generation will one day be running and supporting the GSPCA, helping care for the island’s animals and wildlife in the years to come.
Alongside this new reading programme, the GSPCA provides a wide range of educational opportunities for all ages.

“It’s wonderful to see students from Les Beaucamps High School getting involved in such a positive way. Education is central to everything we do at the GSPCA, because today’s young people will be the ones caring for the animals of tomorrow.
We offer tours for schools, groups, birthday parties and private visits, and we’re always happy to go out to schools, colleges, businesses and community groups to deliver talks on a whole range of subjects. From workshops to training courses, corporate days and volunteering opportunities, there are so many ways to get involved.
We have many cats in our care and many are looking for homes or support with operations like Mr B who needs a £400 operation to remove a cancerous growth.”
