Yesterday the GSPCA team released a female Barn Owl that was rescued on the 3rd December last year.

The bird that has been called Nicki was found injured in the road on L’Ancresse and on arrival the team thought her chances of survival were very slight.

If the finder Nick Fitzgerald hadn’t have rescued the bird she surely wouldn’t still be alive.

The rescuer actually saw Nicki fly into the side of a car which and he thankfully managed to stop and catch the bird and transported her to the GSPCA.

Nicki the Barn owl required immediate vet care and was given fluids and medications as well as a period of time in an intensive care unit.

Nicki soon grew stronger and was soon moved to a rehabilitation aviary.

Earlier in the week she was rung so if she is found again she can be easily identified and yesterday was the BIG day.

GSPCA Animal Care Assistant Beckie Bailey met up with Nick Fitzgerald who rescued Nickie for the release which took place yesterday afternoon at L’Ancresse where she had been found nearly two months ago.

Beckie Bailey said “Not only do we have to thank Nick Fitgerald for rescuing Nickie the Barn Owl we also have to thank him for talking some photos and a video clip of the release.”

“Any bird hit by a car has a slim chance of survival but Nicki was the lucky one.”

“It took weeks of care but thankfully she was strong enough yesterday to be released and it was fantastic to release her back where she was rescued from.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It is very busy here with wildlife from the 100 hedgehogs to the oiled birds in our care, not forgetting the 4 seal pups.”

“We help over 2000 wild animals rescued every year in Guernsey and it is wonderful when birds that are so beautiful like Nicki the Barn Owl are able to be released back to the wild.”

“The GSPCA team work incredibly hard to help and care for the 1000’s of animals through our doors each ear but the animals rescued would be here if it wasn’t for kind individuals like Nick Fitzgerald who rescued Nicki and gave her that chance of survival.”
