The States of Guernsey Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services have issued this statement in regards the oil and oil birds being found around our coast –

‘Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services (ACLMS) received a report of numerous blobs of oil of approximately 10-15cm in diameter in the central reef area of L’Ancresse/Pembroke this morning.  States Works Coastal team attended and have cleared away as much as could be found.  Cautionary signs have been placed at access points to the bay to warn beach users.

The oil was very dark, solidifying and crusted which indicates that it had been at sea for some time and had been broken up by wave action.   It is likely that it came from a ship out at sea discharging oily water or old oil.

Anyone finding oil on a beach is asked to contact ACLMS on [email protected] or Tel: 234567 as soon as possible, with details of the location and the size of the area affected.

The GSPCA is asking people walking the beaches to be watchful for oiled birds.  If a live oiled bird is found please contact the GSPCA as quickly as possible on 01481 257261 (24/7).  Please do not to try to catch it as the birds will try to go back out to sea.   The GSPCA has received six Guillemots affected by oil and found on beaches around the island over the last few days.  Two of these diving birds are in recovery at the GSPCA after treatment but others were either already dead or have since died.  Photographs of a group of Sanderlings taken by a local ornithologist on Grande Rocque beach yesterday also showed several birds with oil stains.

Dumping of oil at sea is illegal under the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter 1972 (London Dumping Convention) – and its 1996 protocol, joint long-term programme (2014-2016).  The Convention prohibits the dumping to sea unless as “incidental to or derived from normal operation” by ships and aircraft.

Guernsey Harbours has asked commercial shipping and aircraft crews to report any signs of oil at sea in the area.’
