Open Garden Event in the Vale to Support GSPCA

The GSPCA is delighted to announce that Committee Member Paul Buckle will be opening his beautiful private garden, Charente, in the Vale this weekend to help raise funds and awareness for the charity.

The open garden event will take place at Charente, La Rochelle Road, Vale, GY3 5DZ on:

Friday 5 June: 5pm to 9pm

Saturday 6 June and Sunday 7 June: 10am to 5pm

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the stunning subtropical garden while supporting the vital work of the GSPCA, helping care for animals in need across the Bailiwick.

The event forms part of the 2026 Rendez-vous aux Jardins, a Europe-wide celebration of parks and gardens organised by the French Ministry of Culture. This year’s theme, “The Five Senses in the Garden: The View,” invites visitors to discover gardens through sight, perspective, and visual experience.

Paul Buckle, owner of the Charente garden and GSPCA Committee Member, said:

"It's an absolute privilege to be taking part in this year's Rendez-vous aux Jardins and to welcome visitors into our subtropical garden. It's been an exciting year of reshaping and developing the space, especially following Storm Goretti, but the garden is now stronger than ever and we're looking forward very much to sharing our extensive collection of subtropical and tropical plants. We always enjoy chatting with visitors and hope they find plenty of inspiration and surprises as they explore and experience the diversity of nature."

The event is part of a wider programme featuring more than 2,800 gardens across Europe, with over 10 locations taking part across the Bailiwick this year.

Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, President of the Committee for Economic Development, said:

"It's exciting to be launching the Normandy programme of this Europe-wide event right here in Guernsey. Such an occasion highlights the closer cultural and economic ties we continue to develop with our French neighbours, and provides an opportunity to showcase to the wider the continent our island's tremendous horticultural expertise and heritage."

Zoe Gosling, Lead Marketing Officer for VisitGuernsey, added:

"We are absolutely delighted to be supporting this event. This year's theme, The View, affords us an embarrassment of riches when it comes to our gardens, showcasing the very best our Islands have to offer. It demonstrates a tangible example of how working together can increase our reach, promoting Guernsey to a wider European audience."

Travel and Parking Information
Parking at the property is very limited. Visitors are encouraged to:

Use bus routes 11, 91 or 92, with a stop on La Rochelle Road close to the garden, or

Park nearby at L’Ancresse Common and enjoy a short walk towards Bordeaux.

All are warmly invited to attend, enjoy a unique garden experience, and support the GSPCA’s ongoing work caring for animals and promoting animal welfare across the island.
