Each year the Province of the Channel Islands Order of the Secret Monitor chose two charities to support and in the past year one of those charities was the Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA).

The GSPCA helps over 3000 wild animals every year and many more domestic and those in need.

The animal the GSPCA helps more than any is the humble hedgehog, in fact over 700 in a year.

The Province of the Channel Islands when they look to support a charity contact them to see what they really need and with so many hedgehogs the GSPCA has been upgrading the hedgehog facilities.

Recently the Provincial Grand Supreme Ruler Right Worthy Brother Mike Le Conte along with the Deputy Provincial Grand Supreme Ruler Very Worthy Brother Gareth Callan visited the GSPCA in St Andrews where the Manager is Steve Byrne a Brother of the order and member of the Arch of Steel in the Province.

Steve gave a tour and introduced Mike and Gareth to some of the hedgehog residents and also explained the work of the GSPCA.

Steve Byrne said "It was lovely to show R.Wy.Bro Mike Le Conte and .Wy.Bro Gareth Callan around the GSPCA and we are so grateful for the amazing donation of £1000 from the OSM Province of the Channel Islands for new hedgehog facilities. We often have over 100 hedgehogs in our care at any time and with many of their enclosures nearly 20 years old the funds will help towards replacing these with brand new pens which hopefully will move into the new Wildlife Hospital we are looking to build in the next year. The Order of the Secret Monitor is a wonderful and friendly Order which I very much enjoy and the fund raising that goes on is truly incredible and from all at the GSPCA a huge thanks to all the Brethren for all they have given to what will make a real difference helping wildlife in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The GSPCA celebrates 150 years this year and we have so much to celebrate and these new cages being specially made really helps with the wonderful celebrations."

R.Wy.Bro Mike Le Conte said "Gareth and I had a lovely visit at the GSPCA and it was great to see behind the scenes. Each year the Province selects a Guernsey and a Jersey charity to support. Many of the OSM members have a passion for wildlife and this year in Guernsey we decided to help the GSPCA as they need new hedgehog cages. During the tour we got to see many of the animals and facilities which included a few of the young hedgehogs the GSPCA are caring for. The GSPCA does so much for the animals and community of Guernsey and even help the seal pups from Jersey and we are very proud to support their fantastic work."

Wy.Bro Gareth Callan said "I try to get over to Guernsey when I can and it was wonderful to pop along to the GSPCA before the La Marchant Conclave No 421 meeting. Guernsey and Jersey have Channel island news shared and we often see the work of the GSPCA on the local news in Jersey. They do fabulous work and it is great that we can support them. Thank you to Bro Steve for the guided tour and telling us so much about all the work the GSPCA does day and night."
