Peej the Pleinmont Grey Seal Pup rescued on Saturday now safe at the GSPCA

Friday night GSPCA Volunteer Ambulance Warden had a call of a seal pup on the slip way in Pleinmont.

Suzy Rose GSPCA Volunteer Ambulance Warden said “We had a call on the GSPCA Emergency helpline from a member of public concerned abouts a young seal pup on Friday night.”

“It was around 815pm and getting dark and a long walk to the location where we checked the pup first but it was decided that monitoring was the best course of action so I set my alarm for 5am the next morning as I wanted to check on him before others started walking in the area.”

“I was really concerned so I called Head of Marine Mammals Geoff who came straight down as he really needed rescuing.”

“We have named the seal pup Peej.”

Geoff George Head of Marine Mammals said “We arrived just after 6am to rescue the grey seal pup who has now been named Peej thanks to Suzy.”

“The pup is about the same age of the other 4 we have so born around December and should be around twice the weight so very thin and when we rescued Peej not showing great signs of condition as so thin.”

“It’s taken  afew days but Peej is now interested in fish and we have let the pup out in the pools.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “This year we celebrate 150 years and we seem to be extremely busy rescuing seal pups.”

“It was lovely earlier this month to release Shakespeare who was rescued in Jersey in October 2022 and Emilia in Guernsey in December 2022 and both were less than half their body weight and extremely poorly when they arrived.”

“They had a long road to get better and it was so nice to see them back where they belong.”

“On Saturday the team were called out to rescue Peej who although is roughly the same age as Shakespeare and Emilia when we released them they were around 60-70kgs  rather than the 30kgs poor Peej is currently.”

“It is difficult to say why Peej is so thin at this stage but Geoff and the team are working around the clock to ensure the pup has the very best care.”

“The other 4 pups Henny, Echo, Hector and Cleopatra rescued this season continue to do well and improve daily.”

“With now 5 seal pups we are going through many fish each day and there are many ways to support their care from donating online to supporting our 150 year celebrations helping seals and other animals in Guernsey.”

“In the last decade we have rescued and released 27 grey seal pups back into the wild and the 5 in our care and keeping us very busy.”

"We have some great web pages with advice on what to do if you see a seal pup which are being born at this time of year or oiled birds, although we are only a call away on 257261."

"With young seal pups the main piece of advice is to please not approach them as you can scare their mother away and if you see one to please call us on 257261 and we can make sure they are safe or give advice."

"For those out with dogs please don't let them approach seal pups as this can scare their mothers off and if they were to bite your dog and cause a nasty injury."

"As well as wildlife we have to ensure our own pets and animals are safe and secure with the high winds as we often see dogs escaping from gates being blown open to farm animals escaping."

Some grey seal facts -

• Population numbers since 1960s have doubled
• A grey seal pup weighs 14kg at birth
• A grey seal pup mothers milk contains 60% fat
• Grey seals can dive to a depth of 70m
• Another name for a grey seal is the horsehead seal
• Grey seals are found in the waters surrounding Europe, Russia, North America, and Channel Islands
• Grey seals can be found in estuaries, inter tidal zones, brackish water, polar and shallow seas
• There are 18 known species of seal in the world
• Many sick seal pups need tube feeding every 2-3 hours day and night on arrival
• The seal pups in our care once eating will consume 20-30 herring or mackerel each day
• We aim for a release weight in excess of 40 kg, with good weather and a remote location
• The GSPCA has returned 23 seals back to the wild in the last ten years
