Pollinator Project Visit Helps GSPCA Continue Supporting Wildlife and Nature
The GSPCA was delighted to welcome Gordon and Sharon from Guernsey's Pollinator Project team to the Animal Shelter this morning to visit the charity's thriving pollinator patch and provide valuable advice on how the area can be enhanced further with minimal time and expense.
Currently buzzing with bees, fluttering butterflies and a wide range of insects, the pollinator patch has become an important wildlife haven within the Shelter grounds. During the visit, Gordon and Sharon shared their expertise and ideas with GSPCA team members Tim Pellett, Libby Lucas, and Scott, who is currently undertaking a work placement with the charity.
The tour sparked many discussions about ways to improve not only the pollinator area but also other parts of the Shelter grounds to further benefit local wildlife.
The GSPCA has been based at its current site for nearly 100 years and has worked hard over recent decades to make the grounds increasingly wildlife-friendly. In particular, over the last 15 years the charity has focused on habitat enhancement projects, including developing the pond area, installing nest boxes for a variety of species, and creating wildlife-friendly spaces throughout the site.
Most recently, volunteers from Guernsey Raiders kindly helped construct a log pile fence, providing valuable shelter and habitat for insects and other wildlife. The GSPCA also works closely with the Guernsey Beekeepers Association, which operates an apiary at the Shelter where new beekeepers can gain practical training and experience.
Each year the GSPCA rescues and cares for thousands of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, making the protection of the natural environment an important part of the charity's work.
Tim Pellett of the GSPCA said:
"It was wonderful to welcome Gordon and Sharon to the Shelter and to benefit from their knowledge and enthusiasm. Our pollinator patch is already attracting a fantastic variety of bees, butterflies and insects, but there is always more we can do. Having expert advice on simple and practical improvements helps us make the most of the space we have while ensuring it continues to support local wildlife."
Libby Lucas added:
"I really enjoyed showing Gordon and Sharon around and hearing their ideas. It's inspiring to see how relatively small changes can make a big difference for pollinators and other wildlife. We're looking forward to putting some of those suggestions into practice and sharing what we learn with visitors and during our education activities."
