Sad news as Blizzard the poorly seal pup passes over to rainbow bridge after months of intensive care – APPEAL for mackerel and herring to help feed the pups
The GSPCA are devasted to report the sad loss of Blizzard the grey seal pup in the early hours of yesterday.
Rescued back in December Blizzard has had many health and physical issues since being rescued and despite the pups incredible around the clock care and a range of veterinary treatments we were unable to save the very poorly pup.
This news comes only a week after announcing the progress of Ice Ice Baby and Icicle moving to the next stage of their rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, Iceberg Lettuce remains in our intensive care area, where the pup continues to receive specialised support, including assisted feeding and close monitoring, but we are hopeful the pup can move on to the next stage soon.
Seal Release Competition – Winner Announcement Very Soon
We’re incredibly grateful for the wonderful support shown by the community for our seal pups and the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal through donations at:

Everyone who donated through the link and left a comment has been entered into our special prize draw to join the GSPCA team at a future seal release.
The winner will be announced as soon as we get the completed list of all donations confirmed, and we want to sincerely thank every single person who has contributed so far — your generosity truly helps save lives.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
“We are devastated to report the sad loss of Blizzard the grey seal pup in the early hours of yesterday. The pup received incredible around the clock care and despite a huge range of vet treatments and intensive care as well as moments of hope the poorly pup recently deteriorated and passed to rainbow bridge and all the team are very upset for this sad loss as so much goes into the care of every animal at the GSPCA.
The other three pups two in the final stage of rehab Icicle and Ice Ice Baby improve daily and we are hopeful that we may have Iceberg Lettuce join them soon.
We are very much in need of fish mackerel ideally and herring if any available and whole fresh fish are ideal for our pups for their rehab.
Our #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal continues as we pass the halfway mark, and the new facilities are looking absolutely amazing — a real testament to what this community can achieve together. There is still much to do, and we continue to welcome support through donations, our Buy a Brick scheme, and many other ways to get involved. These improved facilities will help wildlife, pets and the community for generations, and every contribution makes a real difference.”
Thank You from the GSPCA
We will continue to keep the community updated on the progress of Ice Ice Baby, Icicle, and Iceberg Lettuce as they move closer to their return to the wild.
Thank you once again to everyone who has donated, shared our appeal, or supported the GSPCA in any way — together, we are making a life‑changing difference for these beautiful young seals.
#GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal Update
The GSPCA Wildlife Hospital, part of the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal, continues to progress impressively. The west wing roof trusses are now complete, giving a striking preview of the future facility, and the east wing roof trusses are scheduled to begin very soon.
With the project now at its halfway point, the GSPCA is encouraging supporters to join the appeal by:
Every contribution supports the future of wildlife rescue in Guernsey for generations to come.
