The GSPCA are warning dog walkers taking their four legged friends to local commons of a current concern.

There appears to be large numbers of what we believe are thorny seeds from what is believed is the Erodium cicutarium also know as Redstem Storks Bill which get caught in your dogs feet and fur along many of the commons and grassy areas especially L’Ancresse, Port Soif and Chouet,

The flowers of this plant are 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) wide and have 5 petals and 5 sepals. The developing green seeds look like a stork bill. The mature seeds are point-tipped and have a coiling and uncoiling tail that self-buries them when they get wet. The leaves are in a flat basal rosette and are dark green and pinnate with pinnately cleft leaflets. The stems are reddish and hairy.

The seeds can be a hazard to dogs and other animals. Because the seeds have a sharp pointed tip, coil themselves up, and can move and try to bury themselves when they get wet, they can become tangled in a dog's fur and then penetrate its skin in an attempt to bury themselves.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have had quite a few reports of dog owners finding very pointy seeds being caught in their dogs feet and paws.”

“The main areas seem to be L’Ancresse to Chouet and also around Port Soif.”

“We believe the issue is from Erodium cicutarium also know as Redstem Storks Bill which are nasty little pointy seeds which get tangled in your pets fur.”

“Most owners have found using soapy water seems to help coax them out but any concerns we would always advise speaking to your vet.”

“As many beaches are now closed to dogs many are using the the commons to  walk their dogs and the GSPCA want to share the recent concerns from reports we have had.”

“Below is a list of beaches where dogs are banned between 1st May and 30th September on the following.”

Fermain

Petit Bot

L'Erée

Vazon (Northern end)

Cobo

Port Soif

L'Ancresse

Pembroke

Dogs are not permitted on Lihou Island and Lihou causeway all year round.

Steve Byrne continued “It is really important when enjoying the beaches, commons and coastline with your dog that they don’t upset the wildlife as many will be nesting and breeding this time of year.”

“We do want dogs and owners to enjoy the coastline and commons, as well as keeping wildlife safe.”

“It is also important to note during the same summer months, from 1st May until 30th September inclusive, you cannot ride your horse on any beaches in Guernsey between 10.00am and 7.00pm.”

“We do run first aid courses for pets and to check out the upcoming dates please visit https://www.gspca.org.gg/services/training-courses .”

“To care for the 1000’s of wild animals and many others in our care we really need your support, please donate by going to https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA)  , call 01481 257261 or by post please make cheques payable to 'GSPCA’ and send to GSPCA, Rue des Truchots, St Andrews, Guernsey, GY6 8UD.”
