Recently our Treasurer Louise Gambrell visited Le Platon Care Home where she met one of our incredible supporters.

While chatting Louise found out that Patricia Hands had written a Eulogy for her friends dog which she shared.

Lousie Gambrell GSPCA Treasurer said “I recently met one of our supporters, Patrica Hands, who wrote a beautiful eulogy to her friend’s dog recently that we wanted to share with everyone.”

“It was wonderful to meet Patricia and her Eulogy has been read and moved Royalty to a national animal charity board meeting.”

“Last week many enjoyed time with their dogs for ‘Bring Your Dog to Work Day’ and we know how precious time is spent with our dogs and pets.”

A Eulogy to Spike by Patrica Hands.

‘May I pay homage to a bedraggled street dweller found in a large city?

A probable mongrel with much Paterdale and about four years old, was rescued and given a loving home by a very good friend of mine.

Spike’s perception and selflessness was, perhaps, unexpected or unusually evident?  His total dedication to his new mistress was beyond question and very moving. As long as he knew where she was at all times - including her bathroom visits - he was content.   Unexpectedly, I was to share her home for the last five years of Spike’s life.
It was his unconditional sense of duty coupled with his complete trust and love which was so admirable and humbling.

The most poignant memory for me - apart from that loving gaze from my knee - is his final journey from his loving home.

As neither his ‘mother’ nor I were strong enough to carry him, a delightful neighbour constructed a slope and he was placed in a wheelbarrow on his day bed. Even then, not a whimper but just adoring, accepting eyes as he was placed in the back of my car.

A helpful, caring vet carried the special burden and laid this adorable servant upon a table.

Knowing what was to come I am sure, he turned forgiving, apologetic and totally adoring eyes upon us as the vet did his duty.
Not a whimper.   Mankind has much to learn.

God bless, good night and thank you dearest Spike.’

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We must thank Patricia for sharing her moving Eulogy to Spike.”

“At the GSPCA we are all love animals dearly but sadly we cannot escape the day that we have to say goodbye.”

“Sadly we help 1000’s of islanders and families through the death of their pet with our pet cremation service and have a Pet Memorial Garden and Chapel of Rest at the Animal Shelter as well as a Bereavement web page online with help and advice for those grieving for the loss of their beloved pet https://www.gspca.org.gg/services/pet-bereavement-advice-page .”

“Many of us will have endured the heart ache in losing a pet and we strive to ensure we provide the most caring and dignified service we can during what is an incredibly difficult time.”

“We also have advice for owners worried about what would happen to their pet if they have no one to leave them to if like Hilda the 90 year old tortoise their beloved pet was to outlive the owner on our Gifts in Will web page https://www.gspca.org.gg/about/gifts-wills-and-funding .”

“Hilda is one of the residents at the GSPCA and has met many Lt Governors to Royalty, been to the schools of Guernsey to many of the events held around the island.”

“Legacies are an incredible way we can help your pets if needed and also to make a lasting memory in helping the animals of Guernsey and the future of animal welfare.”

“With 1000’s of animals through the GSPCA every year and our biggest build in 152 years we remember those beloved animals we have helped over our long history and look to the future to those we are and will need to help in the coming days and years.”
