On the 18th March 1967 Supertanker Torrey Canyon ran aground on rocks between Land's End and the Scilly Isles and leaked its cargo of oil into the sea.
The 974-ft (297m) tanker, which was carrying a cargo of 119,328 tonnes of crude oil, hit Pollard's Rock in the Seven Stones reef. The oil patch was believed to be the biggest ever to threaten the West Country coastline and the Channel Islands.
There were fears that the supertanker could catch fire or break-up in heavy seas.
After hearing that a new gas boiler was on the GSPCA’s wish list for improvements to their facilities, Guernsey Gas has stepped in, fitting and providing a brand new Vaillant gas condensing boiler for the animal welfare charity.
Steve Byrne from the GSPCA explained: "Our old boiler had fallen into disrepair."
"Without hot water we are unable to carry out many of the tasks required to care for some of the animals we look after."
"This includes washing oiled sea birds, cleaning out animal enclosures and general cleaning for implements and utensils."
Last month during GSPCA Purple Week celebrating 144 years helping animals in Guernsey the Animal Shelter had many visitors from local schools to find out the work that goes on 24/7 365 days a year helping animals in Guernsey

Over the last few months a fantastic team from CEPS have been helping out at the GSPCA with a number of projects.
In 2004, the Social Security Department introduced the Community & Environmental Projects Scheme (CEPS). CEPS provides temporary work and training opportunities for people who are not working due to unemployment or long-term illness. CEPS is managed on behalf of the Social Security Department by States Works and project work is selected with training opportunities in mind so that people learn new skills.
We overjoyed to report that Catrina is now at the GSPCA after over a month at Isabelle Vets.
Catrina was found on a wet, cold, dark evening 5 weeks ago after being hit by a car and has needed intensive care at the vets.
Sadly with no microchip and no owner this loving, affectionate and sweet cat has been cared for by the team at Isabelle Vets and the GSPCA.
Catrina needed an extensive operation and her veterinary treatment continues as she has a number of health issues but she is improving on a daily basis.
Currently a very shy dog is loose around the Ladies Bay area.

Molly is a rescue dog and very shy so unlikely to approach strangers.
With all of the conservation work going on at the GSPCA and planting thanks to St Andrews Floral Group we have to stop and think of the plants that can put our pets at risk.
This thought and after a recent BBC Guernsey interview has prompted the GSPCA and St Andrews Floral Group into putting together a garden display to help pet owners.
Last month GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne met a lovely young man called Oscar Martin who had just turned 6 years of age.
Oscar who goes to Acorn House decided for his sixth birthday he would donate half of his birthday money to help the animals at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
Oscars favourite animals are kittens (at the moment) and when he came to make his very kind donation last month he got a behind the scenes guided tour to see the many animals and even some of the young cats at the GSPCA.
