Last night we greeted 19 new faces wanting to help at the GSPCA.
From work experience to Duke of Edinburgh, dog walking to reception, cat pen cleaning to helping with the wildlife, fund raising to volunteering to gain experience for their CV all of the group were looking to help the work of the Animal Shelter and some to help gain life skills.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager greeted the group and gave a presentation and talk about the work we carry out 24 hours 7 days a week, the differing volunteer roles and how to work safely at the GSPCA Shelter and our events.
At the GSPCA we now see over 40 ferrets coming into our care each year.
Most come in as strays and many are here for many months as we find it hard to find them loving new homes.
We were overjoyed last week when we had an enquiry from Alderney offering a home to ferrets.
With nearly 10 in our care the gentleman popped over to visit those in our care and Little Man and Tobias took his fancy.
Both ferrets made the journey with their new owner and we have just heard that they are settling well.
Millions of people, young and old, are stamp collectors (philatelists), and philately is an educational and fun hobby.
Couple this with helping animals in Guernsey, keeping stamps out of landfill and instead recycling stamps to collectors.
At the GSPCA we collect used postage stamps to raise money for the many animals we rescue, help and care for.
On Sunday 12th April at 9.30am Island FM and Creature Comforts are inviting all dog owners to join us on a brisk walk from Liberation Monument to Bulwer Avenue and returning to Liberation Monument.
Minimum £5 registration fee, with all proceeds going to GSPCA.
Last month Rubis an entire black and white stray cat was handed into the GSPCA.
Full of cuts and bites this very affectionate cat that had no chip or collar came in with a number of injuries.
Inline with the 2012 legislation every stray animal including cats have to be held for 21 days whilst we try and find their owner.
Sadly with no microchip, collar or anyone coming forward for Rubis he hasn't been claimed.
During his time at the Shelter we have found that Rubis with his lovely friendly nature and his wounds now healed has other health issues.
Another happy forever home for a GSPCA cat.
Almost 2 months ago Bronx a tabby male cat was brought into the GSPCA with no microchip and no owner found.
After his 21 days at the GSPCA in line with the new Animal Welfare Law, an assessment, vet treatment and checks the lovely friendly cat found a new home.
Bronx who is now called 'Hugo' is doing very well and his new owners informed us today with the following words "We thought you would like to know that Hugo who was Bronx has settled in well to his new home. "
Last week NGIT kindly donated 5 refurbished PC's to the GSPCA.
The GSPCA are extremely grateful to NGIT for the much needed equipment.
The equipment will be deployed around site to replace a number of computers that are extremely old.
The GSPCA use computers and software around the Shelter to keep the records of the 1000's of animals that come through our doors, the lost and found records and much more.
On Monday 16th March the GSPCA held the third bingo night of 2015 at the Market Bistro.
To help celebrate St Patrick's Day the evening before, it was held with an Irish theme with a Leprechaun calling out the numbers.
Every winner received an Irish themed prize as well as other goodies and cash
The event was held in the Inner Market Building where tables of all sizes were set up for those attending.
On Sunday the GSPCA welcomed 7 local dog owners and individuals interested in learning how to help save dogs lives.
The training session started at 9.30am where Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager talked to the group about basic first aid for dogs and what to do in the event of an emergency.
The sessions take around 2 hours and cover what to do from seizures to CPR.
