On Monday after 6 weeks of intensive care a gannet that was rescued by Animal Collection Officer Geoff George covered in oil and very sick was released back to the wild.
John as he was named, was rescued from St Peter Port harbour and was in such bad condition on entry that without the expertise and care of the Shelter team he would certainly have died in the wild.
The GSPCA has had one of the busiest starts to any year with the wild weather which killed thousands of seabirds and injured many more.
On Friday the 4th April also know as World Stray Day the GSPCA will be in Market Bistro with a stall and selection of animals looking for new homes.
We are also pleased to announce that Market Bistro will be donating to the GSPCA to help animals for every coffee sold so please do pop in to support them and us.
Last week (Tuesday 25th) Sarah Creasey the GSPCA Education and Welfare Officer visited St Martins reception with Brodie, the Golden Retriever, and talked to them about what we do at the Shelter, how too look after your pets and the best way to meet a dog.
Education is a major part of the GSPCA’s work and something that we feel is vitally important to the future of animal welfare.
On Saturday 19th April, we are celebrating the Easter Weekend throughout the community with Island FM by asking all dog owners to come together and help raise money for Help a Guernsey Child and the GSPCA.
Through a brisk walk and some community spirit we will raise money for the charities.
During the first week of the Easter term at the GSPCA we will be running a series of open days.
During the week we will have from bric-a-brac to new goods on sale as well as refreshments including hot drinks.
You will also be able to see some of the animals looking for good homes in the Event and Training Room.
We are also arranging guided tours at 10.45am and 2pm. We are asking for a minimum donation of £5 per person and £3 per child, or £15 for a family of four.
On Saturday a cormorant was rescued in Talbot Valley which isn't the usual place to see these fantastic birds.
Although a little thin and weak Sid as he has been named only required a few days rest.
With the weather just right and a belly full of fish, Sid was released back to the wild yesterday by Animal Collection Officer Geoff George.
Geoff George ACO said 'Sid certainly didn't waste any time getting back to the wild.'
'We released him below Castle Cornet and he really couldn't wait to get back to where he belongs.'
Recently concerns over numbers of unwanted and stray rabbits have been highlighted in Guernsey.
From 2012 to 2013 the GSPCA has seen an increase of 104 to 129 rabbits equating to a 24% rise.
With only 8 stray rabbits in 2012 and 9 in 2013 being reclaimed by owners, the numbers of rabbits have proved a challenge at the Shelter.
Saying this, the good news is that the Shelter has expanded the number of pens to help cope with our hopping little friends.
Yesterday 13 new students were trained in Dog First Aid.
With thousands of dogs kept as pets around the Bailiwick, yesterday the GSPCA held the second session with 13 new dog first aiders who spent the morning learning their ABC for dogs to what to do if their dog had a seizure.
The group enjoyed not only learning about what to do, but also got a chance to meet Mickey a Basset Hound who is at the Shelter and made a very good model and let those taking part find the heart beat.
At the GSPCA we always have many animals in need of new homes.
Often the dogs find homes very quickly as we have a list of those looking but sometimes the older dogs are harder to find that forever home.
One of these older chaps in need is Pepe. Pepe is a lovely little dog facing many challenges as he has limited eye sight; but he can see shadows and loves people and is a spritely little man.
