With a peak in interest of students breaking up for the summer and asking to volunteer at the GSPCA we are holding an induction afternoon on Tuesday 22nd July at 2pm at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
To volunteer at the GSPCA you have to be at least 14 years of age. If you are under this age you can come along to learn about the work we do and also find out how you can raise funds and help at our many events.
Today the GSPCA have been at the OSA recruitment Pop Up Shop with a selection of other charities to speak to the community about volunteering.
With the sun shining, the GSPCA would like to thank OSA Recruitment, Volunteer.gg, Association of Guernsey Charities and the Community Foundation for the chance to join some great causes in St Peter Port to spread the word of helping animals in Guernsey through Volunteers Week.
Today the OSA Pop Up Shop in Smith Street, St Peter Port will be manned by a variety of charities and one of the themes is animals as part of volunteers week.
We will have information on hand and hopefully representatives between 10am and 2pm and also 5pm and 7pm.
If you are interested in helping animals in Guernsey then there are many roles and ways you can get involved with the GSPCA, so please pop down or you can call the Shelter on 01481 257261 for details.
Around the clock volunteers in Guernsey are helping animals whether at the GSPCA or other animal charities.
Every single night of the year a volunteer helps ensure that at the GSPCA we can provide around the clock emergency cover.
The volunteers that make up this fantastic group come from all walks of the community and help ensure every night between 6pm until 8am the next someone can go out to rescue an animal in need.
Matt Hill-Smith and Jen Bradshaw are two of our volunteer wardens and help cover on average two nights a week.
Only 2 days to get your entries in for the GSPCA Hedgehog Competition.
Sarah Ozanne Animal Care Assistant said 'We've had some fantastic entries for our GSPCA Hedgehog Competitions but we would love to see a few more.'
'We have a hedgehog awareness poster competition and one for making a hedgehog home.'
'You have until Friday to get your entries in and we will be announcing the winners soon as well as a date when we will be running a hedgehog talk.'
On Wednesday another 13 new volunteers joined the GSPCA team.
Every 8 weeks or so the GSPCA hold Volunteer Induction evennings and this week we welcomed the newest group to the team.
With well over 340 volunteers helping the Animal Shelter every year and over 60 new helpers since the beginning of the year we are very grateful to all the help and support we receive.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'The volunteer support we receive is just fantastic and means we can do so much.'
We are always looking for volunteers to help at the Shelter in a variety of roles.
This Wednesday we are holding our second Volunteer Induction Evening of 2014.
After the last evening having an attendance of 33 new volunteers the GSPCA now has over 300 individuals from around Guernsey helping in the many roles available from dog walking to fund raising.
We have a very special team of individuals here at the GSPCA. Both staff and volunteers work around the clock to help animals in our care and around Guernsey 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Each quarter we ask for nominations of those that have stood out amongst the team and here are the results for those nominated for Volunteer and Staff Member for Autumn/Winter 2014 -
Jackie Le Marchant
Today Shelter staff and volunteers had the pleasure of a local expert in Gulls give a talk on their movements, the tracking of them and their behaviour.
Paul Veron who has been ringing birds since 1976 and has rung over 53,000 himself since starting has a wealth of knowledge that he shared with the GSPCA team before they started their work.
Paul talked primarily about the movements and ringing work of the Herring Gull, Black Back Gull and Lesser Back Gull all of which breed around the Bailiwick.
