Win a chance to see a seal pup release - GSPCA Calls for Support Following International Seal Day to their care & the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal

The GSPCA is appealing for public support following International Seal Day, which took place on Sunday, as four grey seal pups continue to receive intensive care at the Shelter. This appeal comes shortly after a heart‑warming moment earlier this month when three rehabilitated seal pups were successfully released into the wild on a sunny afternoon at Portlet.

The four remaining pups in our care are making excellent progress. Over the coming days and weeks, some will move into the next stage of their rehabilitation journey, transitioning into larger pools as they build strength, confidence, and reach their required release weights.

Each of the pups currently eats 20–30 fish a day, mainly herring and mackerel, and their care costs at least £30–£40 per pup per day. With food, specialist treatment, heating, filtration, and constant monitoring, the costs rise quickly — and the GSPCA is asking the community to help make their recovery possible.

To encourage support, anyone who donates via our giving.gg link before the end of March 2026 and leaves a comment of support will be automatically entered into a free prize draw to join the GSPCA team at a future seal pup release — a truly unforgettable experience.

How to Win a chance to see a seal pup release and help

To donate and be entered into the free prize draw to attend a future seal pup release which will likely include Blizzard, Iceberg Lettuce, Ice Ice Baby and/or Icicle, please donate via this link (no minimum amount) and leave a message in the comments section:
https://giving.gg/donate/event/10265/Guernsey-seal-pups-and-the-GSPCA-Biggest-Build-Appeal (donations must be made before 11.59pm 31st March 2026 and include a comment of support)

Your generosity helps give these seal pups a second chance at life in the wild — and supports the future of animal care at the GSPCA and build the new Wildlife Hospital and other facilities.

Quotes

Geoff George, GSPCA Head of Marine Mammals, said:

“The four pups in our care Blizzard, Iceberg Lettuce, Ice Ice Baby and Icicle are doing really well, and it’s wonderful to see their personalities developing every day. A few of them are nearly ready to move into the next pool, which is a big milestone as they get closer to their release weight and good health. The recent release at Portlet was absolutely fantastic — a bright, sunny day and the perfect moment to see the three pups we worked so hard to rehabilitate head back into the sea where they belong. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who helps us make these success stories possible.”

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:

“Every donation — large or small — makes an enormous difference to the care of these beautiful seal pups and helps fund the work we do every day. Supporting through the giving.gg link not only helps with the costs of fish, treatment and round‑the‑clock care, but also contributes to our #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal. The build is now halfway through, and thanks to amazing community support we have already raised half of the £3,700,000 needed. The new Wildlife Hospital is looking fantastic, with the roof trusses completed on the west wing and the east wing due to start very soon. We still need help to fund additional vital elements too, including solar panels and other sustainability features. We are so grateful to everyone who continues to support our work and our future.”

#GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal Update

The GSPCA Wildlife Hospital, part of the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal, continues to progress impressively. The west wing roof trusses are now complete, giving a striking preview of the future facility, and the east wing roof trusses are scheduled to begin very soon.

With the project now at its halfway point, the GSPCA is encouraging supporters to join the appeal by:

  • Donating to the Build Fund
  • Sponsoring a room, kennel, aviary, or specialised unit
  • Supporting sustainability upgrades, including planned solar panel installations
  • Taking part in events or community fundraising
  • Leaving a gift or message of support via giving.gg

Every contribution supports the future of wildlife rescue in Guernsey for generations to come.
