World Wildlife Day: GSPCA Celebrates Progress on the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal While Caring for Seven Seal Pups and Oiled Puffin

Today, on World Wildlife Day, the GSPCA is celebrating the incredible wildlife we are privileged to protect here in Guernsey, while highlighting the urgent need for continued support as our #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal reaches its halfway stage. The £3,700,000 redevelopment project—which includes our new Wildlife Hospital, new seal facilities, and essential infrastructure—continues to progress well, but additional funding is still urgently needed for solar panels and other vital equipment to support the future of our 24/7 wildlife care.

At present, we are caring for seven grey seal pups, including the young pup found recently near the Fairy Ring with severe netting injuries embedded around his neck. He is now recovering following urgent rescue and veterinary treatment. Several other pups remain in rehabilitation, and we are delighted to share that three of these pups are now thriving and are expected to be released very soon.

Alongside our seal patients, the GSPCA is also caring for Percival, the oiled puffin found weak, cold and covered in oil at Port Grat, one of few survivors during a concerning surge in deceased seabirds around Europe.

Every year, the GSPCA helps over 3,000 wild animals, from seabirds and hedgehogs to seals and bats. This work continues around the clock, 365 days a year, thanks to our dedicated staff, volunteers and supporters.

“Our seven grey seal pups are doing remarkably well, especially considering the challenging cases we’ve seen this season. The pup rescued from the Fairy Ring was in an awful state when we found him, and without intervention he would not have survived. Three of the pups are now strong, feeding well and preparing for release very soon, which is always a wonderful milestone for us all at the GSPCA.”

Quote: Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager

“World Wildlife Day is the perfect moment to celebrate the incredible animals we share our island with and the community who helps us protect them. As we reach the halfway point of the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal, we continue to ask for the public’s support—whether through buying a brick, donating, sponsoring equipment, or helping us fund essential additions like solar panels to secure a sustainable future for animal care.

Every contribution, big or small, helps us continue our mission, whether that’s rescuing an oiled puffin, saving an entangled seal pup, or caring for the 3,000+ wild animals that come through our doors every year.”
